Prepping for AI

Hi Preppers...

The last time I started a new topic here was 22 Jan 2020 when I started the COVID threads by saying "Erm...I've been reading all about this and to primary source as much as possible and I'm pretty sure this is going to be a thing".

I'm now at that same stage with AI having a massive, society changing impact in the near term.

Maybe we have 24 months, may be we have 5 years.

I'm not talking existential threat to humanity here (although that's a genuine risk but probably more than 10 years away) because how the feck would you even prep for that?

I'm talking....well, I don't even know. And neither do the biggest names in AI. Things are moving so quickly that even they admit they can't predict what things will be like 2 years away.

So I guess my best thoughts after devouring all the books and videos, papers and speeches, etc are:

  • Massive changes in jobs including a huge reduction in many, many existing areas and an increase in as yet niche areas related to AI implementation
  • The risk of mass cyber attacks becoming much more likely so being unable to access banking or anything else we rely on. Worst case scenario even power, etc
  • Quite a significant increase in risk of biological warfare as we are going to get to the point in the next couple of years where bad actors being able to use AI to create new pathogens at relatively low cost and basically in their garage will be possible

At the moment my thinking on prep has been very limited because I'm still absorbing the very fast paced developments every week like ShockShockShock

So right now my initial prep strategy is to keep on top of developments so that I have the best info on where things are heading and don't get blindsided and that I use AI all the time so I don't get 'left behind'.

My next move is probably going to be starting to look at or at least start thinking about how the skills I have can apply or transition to what the world might look like in 18-24 months time work wise.

Then next stop is to consider the access to cash question...you guys probably have that sorted already but as I said on the first COVID thread I'm actually not a prepper at all and not prone to worrying about things but...like COVID...this is coming, it's coming soon and it will make COVID look like a storm in a tea cup!

I'm not sure where to even start, other than the basics which I prep for anyway. Can't really get my head round it.

Have you seen any good resources in your research?

toastiesrule · 11/09/2023 21:13

Have you used it at all? I’ve used chatgpt to execute work tasks - I’ve had to make corrections of course… My take is to embrace the change, learn how to leverage it to help with work.

Cash - really not sure

I don’t think you can plan specifically- I don’t think AI is something to be prepping for specifically, but as someone whose Brexit stash actually came in handy for covid I’d say planning to have 10-14 days of easy to cook or eat balanced calories foods, and water for each person in the house. And some way off grid to cook it is the simplest plan. Mainly stuff you use anyway so it’s easy to rotate in to lessen waste and also not feel like you’re eating rations.
You then have a buffer.
I also make sure we have a good pair of waterproof walking shoes each and a warm coat.

😬. 🤷🏼‍♀️

This is a very good plan. Other than that, I'm not sure.

I've used chatgpt and a couple of the image generators. The image generator is quite naff but in the wrong hands can be used for deep fakes (?) if that's what its' called. ChatGPT is just boring, it's been tweaked I think and come out with some flier than though responses, try and ask it how to solve some personal issues.

I've had no luck trying the google one, Bard as I can't sign up for it despite having a gmail account.

One worry I have about generative ai is that everything will become so, so bland . yes I know it can help you along a bit with projects but it prevents unique creativity, everything will just look and sound the same. The output lacks.. soul, feeling, passion, emotion.

People will become reliant on using it for tasks and their brains will become unaccustomed to thinking for themselves.

And everyone will be influenced by AI content /style / aesthetic and look and act the same.

I'd say being physically fit and taking care of your physical and mental health is important, staying in the know, having a good real-life network of friends and family building up a good home library with some great books on philosophy, history, classics, favourite reads.

@wheresmymojo would you mind linking to some good info about AI? Happy to receive a DM if you prefer.

some holier than though responses,

would definitely keep some cash and change about in safe places. enough to get a top up shop in at least. bus fare. etc just in case the cash exchange system goes tits up because some poor unfortunate forgot a full stop or something seemingly insignificant in computer code. (think NATS, various banks have had issues etc)

One practical thing you can do is to make you don’t have any photos of you or your childrek on social media, or rather films where you can here your/their voice. Three seconds of a voice is enough for AI to use for future phonecalls where someone is pretending to be you/your/child/family. Imagine an emergency situation, and the person will look and sound just like your dear family. So, have a safe word or maybe safe questions to ask that only you would know of. I am definitely not an expert btw, but this is my take on it so far. Three seconds is not a lot. A tik tok video, and they basically own the rights to you already.

Yes. It feels like we will become the robots, and they will become us.

Following as I need to read up and understand all this.

I'm no expert but personally I would do away with household stuff that is "smart" or not get it in the first place, where possible. Alexa, smart meter, smart anything really. I'm not a prepper but I like my stuff dumb. I press a switch and it does what I say, not what any external system says, listens to or can hack. Clearly the computer I'm typing on doesn't comply with that, but you can only do so much.

I agree. I don’t have any of it on purpose, but I do have my iPhone and so that would be enough anyway.

grenadeapple · 12/09/2023 20:46

And if you have older parents, talk to them also about asking a question only you would know if they had an emergency phonecall from you or anyone in your family. It’s just the beginning of this I am sure, but still.

You can put black tape over the camera on your laptop. For when you don’t use it at least. There are things to buy for this, you just slide it over the camera.

grenadeapple · 12/09/2023 20:55

@BlackeyedSusan our town (not in the UK) had some sort of blackout last week. Never ever happens. But they closed all shops, noone could get in. And they checked people going out. You could not use cash. But yes, I do agree it’s smart to have cash. No shops where I live accept cash though. Not even our banks. You cannot put cash in your own account by going to the bank.
