Can anyone recommend a good one?

Or are they all much the same and just get whatever's on a good deal?

We have 3 different types off Amazon and they all seem OK, 3-5 hours runtime.

They do seem to be getting more expensive each week and the one I was going to recommend is now sold out as are many of the others. I would just buy whatever is available for next day delivery and do it soon.

Thought that might be the case - just ordered two (different types) and fingers crossed they'll be OK!

I know I'm a broken record - always going in about this on here - but a rechargeable head torch turned in on an old 2 litre plastic bottle of milk that's filled with water works well as a lantern.

At the end of the summer I picked up a lantern from wowcamping that uses 3 AAA batteries for a few pounds.

I have a Decathlon which is 250 lumens and works well. Has bright, dim and red light options. Lasts a long time (we've used it on Cub camp to light up the marquee on full power for about 3 hours each for 2 nights and it's only been 2/3 empty when I get home, so probably a good 10-12 hours of fully bright light at least before drained, more if used on dim/red).

I just got a new one from a camping store (that I can't think of the brand offhand) that I thought was useful because it is a bright lantern but has 2 detatchable hand torches (that can make the lantern brighter when attached). Runs on a few D batteries for lantern, 3xAAA batteries for each hand torch. But is also fully rechargable - so useful to have both options.

But Bellini's headtorch lantern works really well too. We use that a lot as well.

I've got some dimmable ones from LE - here. I got them when Octopus did their trial for the upcoming Demand Flexibility Service (where smart meter customers will be asked to shift their energy usage away from the peak on certain days). We now use one as a nightlight on the landing; with it dimmed right down, it will last over 24 hours.

I've got a 'solar hand crank camping lantern' (sadly there is no brand name on the box but it came from Amazon) which is my favourite of all our many camping lanterns. It charges from solar, USB or wind up, it has a pop up lantern and separate torch, but most impressively it will charge a phone or other USB device even from the crank. If charged via USB, it has a working time on the lantern of over 35hrs.

I like this one as it can be a power bank too.
