Hi everyone,

I’m trying to use wood fuel more efficiently in my wood burner, playing around with the air wash etc. The problem I have is that the glass usually goes black when I turn the air wash down. I think this was discussed on another thread, which might have been on the Preppers board (but could have been on another board?), and I remember a poster’s photo of perfectly smouldering logs in her wood burner, giving out heat slowly over time instead of loads of flames.

If anyone could give me a link to that thread that’d be greatly appreciated!

Thanks x

Not sure what thread it was but we have a wood burner and the only time the glass has gone black has been if the wood isn't seasoned enough, it can take at least 12 months for wood to be ready to burn 😃

My chimney sweep tells me that shutting the little vent at the top of the stove to slow the flames down (which is what I think you mean by "air wash") is just as bad as fuelling the stove with coal and wet wood.... With the vent at the bottom of my stove, I open it up for the first 10 minutes or so of the fire starting and then close it again so the wood doesn't burn so quickly... (but the top vent remains open)

@BasilParsley I see what you mean, yes we do the same with the bottom vent to get the fire going but we can close the smaller one that's at the top, it stops any air getting in and slows the burning process down, have you tried putting anything in the top vent to close it off?

Hi, Just to say thanks so much for those suggestions!

When I had my Stovax wood burner at my old house I used to close both vents to slow down the burning process, but this hasn’t been working out with my new wood burner that I bought when I moved house.

Closing off the top air vent whilst leaving the bottom one open or half open works perfectly (why didn’t I think of that?!) - so thank you very much, problem solved!
