What's in your Lights Out box?

Following on from the discussion on here about whether or not candles are a good idea in a power cut - I think they are a risk if they are your only light source, I've decided to put a Lights Out box together. My assumption is that lights and heat go out in a power cut.

I'm assuming that I can find stuff in the house once I've got the lighting sorted so I don't need to pack my box with food or blankets.

I'm assuming a short lived rolling blackout that we are warned about in advance as well as an unplanned one.

I'm factoring in an unlikely but not impossible scenario of mobile towers going down so no mobile phones but, in this scenario, I'm magically thinking Grin landlines might still be up.

  1. Torches including head torches and milk bottle lanterns.
  2. List of where useful stuff is - like hurricane lamps, garden solar lights, camping stove &windbreaker, whistle kettle, big umbrella if cooking outside, location of precooked food and hot water in flasks if we have advanced warning
  3. Battery pack and cables for phones
  4. Candles (yes, I will use them) including tea lights
  5. Matches
  6. Lighters
  7. Radios (wind-up/solar charged one + battery powered one)
  8. First aid kit
  9. AAA and AA batteries
10. Duck tape because I'm a prepper (probably a comfort thing) 11. Hooks for the solar powered fairy lights to set up indoors (currently in garden getting the sun) 12. Hot water bottles (if not already in use) 13. Lifestraw (see 10 Grin) 14. Old fashioned rotary dial landline phone - also got one for my in-laws so we can talk to each other.

If you are not a prepper, I would suggest you just get your torches together with batteries and maybe a phone charger and cable. Have a torch outside the box in a place everyone knows about.

I've put some kids fluorescent stars on the box so it will show up easier with a torch when anyone goes looking for it.

You've just reminded me, I've got some of that super reflective material.

Posting this all over but here is the rota. To find out your zone go to powercut105.com and type in your postcode

From what I've seen the plan would be to switch power off 4pm-7pm so DD 8yo will be hungry and need entertaining.

Luckily we have a gas hob so will be able to cook and heat water for drinks/hot water bottle.

Honestly my first plan will probably be to load us into car and drive to the first place that has power as I understand they intend to do different areas each time if they need to deploy. Find somewhere to have a meal then drive home in time for the lights to go back on.

If that's not possible I have a bag in the pantry with a couple of craft kits, lanterns, batteries, torches. That will keep DD entertained and we always have food in that can be cooked on the hob.

Which zone are you?

I have one of sorts. I keep my grab and go camping stuff in a box alongside my hiking tent, sleeping bag and mat, but I've topped it up with extras for the rest of the family as I usually camp alone.
I also have a few meals worth of dehydrated hiking food. I've tried loads an d settled on one that I think is pretty decent.
Also hot chocolate, mug shots, cup a soup, coffee - yes we have it downstairs but I have a secret stash in case of camping trips/running out and needing cheering up if power is off.
Flavoured cous cous (cheap in lidl), plus a few other inexpensive things that can be heated quickly and are my usual camping fayre.

Headtorches
Charged power banks
Lighters, piezo ignitor
Camping stove - jetboil or cheaper version is great if you mostly need to heat water efficiently and safely
Solar lights (not enough, need more)
Batteries, again we have them downstairs but I have my own stash so that I'm in control.
A few random torches, cheap clip on bike lights etc....
Kindle for me - I prefer a book, but this is easier to read than a book by torchlight.
Spare charging cables

@Era zone P
I can't quite make out the text in the Rita it gets blurry if I try to increase the size of the font

Era · 20/10/2022 11:42

Does this help? Zone p is back end of the week. Not affected Monday to wednesday

Era · 20/10/2022 11:45

Zone p is quite a good zone to be in at level 1. Weekdays only Thursday and Friday and during daylight hours. Sunday gets two blocks. Saturday is also free of outages

I thought they were just going to turn the power off in the evening, but according to that for my area (s) it would be off in the middle of the night. How am I supposed to power my husbands medical equipment in the middle of the night then, its vital when he's sleeping

Era · 20/10/2022 11:58

Perhaps a battery back up? It could he sleep at a relatives house in a different zone on that night?

unfortunately the priority services do not include any domestic properties. My DM also has medical equipment going through the night

My family are all in the same zone. FFS, I was worried (because of my medical condition thats triggered by cold) about evening power cuts, but I'm panicking about overnight ones.

I see the power companies advise is to speak to your medical advisor. Because the NHS is flush with cash for back up batteries 🙄

Era · 20/10/2022 12:21

Could you possibly try to shift sleep patterns so that he is awake during the power cut time? Obviously far from ideal I appreciate

Yeah thats worth trying to figure out actually thanks, I don;'t know how well it will work but I guess its worth a try. I'm also investigating battery backup but I'm wondering if I should just be looking at a generator. They are noisy though aren't they? I dont want to piss my neighbours off

Era · 20/10/2022 12:29

Solar generators aren’t noisy(well obviously they make a bit of noise but not much)

PortiasBiscuit · 20/10/2022 12:29

Where are you getting this information? If it ain’t on the BBC it ain’t happening as far as I am concerned and it would be headlines on the BBC

It has been. You must have missed it. Both the national grid and often have put out announcements and are about to start their public information campaigns. The government pulled its public awareness campaign because it was doubling up on the national grid one —and because the pm is incompetent—

Good to known thank you, this thread is helping me feel a bit more prepared, I appreciate the help!

@Era

Would you help me please?

i only have access to my phone & my screen is quite small & eyesight not what it used to be!!

I'm R (apparently) I looked at your screen shot & also found it online. Online it went to further blocks, that basically went through to permanent blackouts!

but just using your screenshot, I appear to have a couple of time slots some days and none on others, is that right?

PortiasBiscuit · 20/10/2022 12:45

I know they are talking about it, just wasn’t aware that this amount of info had been published. I’ll have a look thanks

Yes that’s right. There are 18 levels and level 18 is blackout. Zone R is towards the end of the alphabet so the affected weekdays are at the end of the week. Your zone is Thursday and Friday only at level 1. Not affected at all Monday to Wednesday or at the weekend

CafeCremeMerci · 20/10/2022 12:52

@Era i think what I'm missing is knowing which of the 18 stages we are at. Maybe.

It’s the emergency plan. It’s been in place since 2005.

At the moment level zero. If it happens hopefully it won’t go past level 1..
