Are you all prepping for power cuts?

BBC reported the other day about possible power cuts this winter due to gas shortage. Other than having a few torch light and candles, are you all prepping with anything else?

Interesting level 1 would effect us much more as a household than any other taking into account working from home (need WiFi and meal times.)

I'm of the opinion that misdirection is a widely adopted method of spokespersons who represent very large organisations. Here's the full link....www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-63458441

DH broached it with his parents. FIL said they have candles and flasks. FIL has arthritis and the thought of him walking around with candles horrifies me. I'm giving them a milk carton/head torch lamp and an old fashioned push button analogue phone that I got off eBay for £10.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/11/2022 06:54

the news today says they will be a last resort

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/11/2022 06:54

oops, already posted

bellinisurge · 01/11/2022 07:02

Lockdown was called a last resort. Hope power cuts don't happen. I'm ready if they do.

leesmum · 02/11/2022 07:52

Had this leaflet put through the door yesterday 🙄

Guardian reporting contingency plans for a full week long national grid down event.

Government tests energy blackout emergency plans as supply fears grow

Exclusive: Whitehall officials have ‘war gamed’ Programme Yarrow, a blueprint for coping with outages for up to a week

BobBobBobbing · 02/11/2022 10:49

Don't worry too much about yarrow being an indicator that something dreadful is imminent- it's a project that's been around for ages and wasn't created purely because of the situation we find ourselves in. If you think about the massive blackout along the NE of America/Canada a few years back, you can see why it'd be needed.
It was part of normal contingency planning for the country. Obviously people are updating their plans based on what's going on now, but it doesn't mean that a 7 day outage is likely or imminent.
I'm a prepper and do business continuity plans at work as well. I've got plans for a yarrow incident but at the moment I'm more thinking rolling blackouts or normal winter storms than 7 days of no electric. My total disaster ones are being updated but only as routine.

Saw this, this morning also reported by SkyNews. Having watched previous poster’s video it is a sensible thing that govt have a plan to do execute in this type of scenario. As an adult needs individual and mmediately realised would even know r2 and r4 frequencies or have access to a suitable device ..

snowballupahill · 02/11/2022 10:55

Sorry - should read as an individual I do not know the relevant frequencies (auto correct)

bellinisurge · 02/11/2022 11:28

93.7 FM for Radio 4. 909 or 693 AM for Radio 5.
Easily found on a cheapo battery powered radio. Tbh, just turn the tuning wheel or press the auto tuner and it'll find something.

bellinisurge · 02/11/2022 11:31

Here's an example. Sure there are plenty others. I have a few I've had for years

Are you all prepping for power cuts?
bellinisurge · 02/11/2022 11:32

Or your phone should still get it if mobile data is still available in a power cut - obviously it might not be

ProfYaffle · 02/11/2022 19:20

Interesting to see the power cut leaflet. We got one about preparing for flooding the other day. I was quite impressed to see we have a local Preparedness Forum which is council run and gives advice on grab bags etc. I'm guessing they're nation wide?

Worldgonecrazy · 03/11/2022 09:04

I think the media are doing the usual worst case fear mongering. It is good to be prepared for most eventualities. However any extended power cuts within inner city or sink estates is highly likely to lead to civil and social disturbance. I’m not sure how anyone can plan for that?

Why is there more likely to be civil unrest in these place if the power goes out for everyone?

LolaSmiles · 03/11/2022 09:16

It makes sense to me that the government have discussed emergency plans, so I'm not sure it's helpful the way some of the media are reporting it.

We go camping so have camping stoves, gas, blankets, and our headtorches so other than having spare batteries, and possibly a portable radio, I'm not planning on doing much extra unless this thread gives me some ideas.

the pp literally referenced a sink estate and you’re genuinely asking why there would be a greater change of civil unrest on an inner city sink estate than a small rural village.

Come on. Youre just goading and want an opportunity to scream out “discrimination”. I grew up on one and I can tell you I’d rather be in a rural village than a sink estate in times of unrest and difficulty.

Because there is more poverty and people are less likely to be able to afford to store extra supplies of food and therefore are more likely to do desperate things. I grew up on a council estate, and things have only got worse since then, this is sadly just a fact of life.

I think this government wouldn’t hesitate to send in the army to police and regulate food distribution etc. I don’t think it will come to that as I think the last thing the government want is civil unrest, it puts their position in jeopardy. Obviously there are always situations where it can’t be avoided,

lightand · 03/11/2022 16:11

How many in the army nowadays?
And for 65 million people? Tall order.

And to be controversial. I dont think some elements of the government would mind civil unrest.
They hardly seem to be aiming towards a peaceful Uk, in the great big scheme of things.
