Are you all prepping for power cuts?

BBC reported the other day about possible power cuts this winter due to gas shortage. Other than having a few torch light and candles, are you all prepping with anything else?

I own a diesel geni and I’ve access to farm diesel on tap.

BrieAndChilli · 05/10/2022 21:22

Not prepping on purpose but we naturally have some contingency eg
log burner in lounge so can heat 1 room if no power. Gas hon and electric oven so can use one or the other .
we have camping gas stoves in the garage we can dig out.
lots of blankets/extra duvets/sleeping bags etc for extra warmth
lots of hot water bottles. No idea where they all can from!
various camping lanterns and solar fairy lights etc we can use.
we have a large cupboard of board games which will keep us amused if no electric for TV!

BlueRibbonPen · 05/10/2022 21:22

Gas or electric?

DontMakeMeShushYou · 05/10/2022 21:31

We have a solar panel which charges a leisure battery (for camping) which will run lights and charge phones. Plus camping stoves and plenty of candles and a log burner.

Dogden · 05/10/2022 21:33

I think it's a distinct possibility that we will experience power shortages/cuts/rationing moving forward into next year. I also think not having a plan in place for this would be foolish.

chocolateisavegetable · 05/10/2022 21:35

Have a log burner and a load of wood, candles, 2 fuel sources (electric and oil), large batteries that could be used to power the fridge for several hours. Planning to get a battery where we can take power back out of the electric car if necessary (car kept topped up by charging at night on a very low rate so if there’s a power cut we should have a good supply for a couple of days)

BeanStew22 · 05/10/2022 21:35

Am not wildly concerned, but as I like to be prepared I am planning to buy some wood for the log burner, & will keep car fuelled up (as if power cut at home the most practical solution might be to go to stay with family elsewhere I suppose)

I use gas heating & cooker - but also have an electric shower, plug in radiators & electric blankets so I’d be ok if gas were off for a period (could also cook with electric- kettle/microwave/air fryer). Electric off would be more of an issue, but I don’t think this is what is expected is it?

I do also have a wind up radio that can charge my phone & battery torches but hoping I never have to use those!

AliceMcK · 05/10/2022 21:37

We have a calor gas fire and small camping stove with spare cylinders. I always keep a draw of batteries and torches. My dd won a bunch of candles at a church fete tombola recently so we are covered there haha. We do need a new battery operated radio and phone charger though.

It will help you stay warm as well 🤣

Chompiemompie · 05/10/2022 21:46

top floor flat with gas heating so no option for log burner. we have lots of torches, batteries, wind up lights, candles and blankets ahoy.

i dont know what else i can do really

Jackienory · 05/10/2022 21:49

No.

ShaunaTheSheep · 05/10/2022 21:55

It's unlikely to be everywhere - in the 1970's the power cuts were on a rota system so no one was without power for extended periods. So we'd ride it out, or go and stay elsewhere.

bushtailadventures · 05/10/2022 21:55

We've got loads of blankets, duvets etc so can keep warm with those I guess. Apart from the heating everything is electric so I'm thinking of getting one of those little gas rings. We also have a couple of large flasks, so as long as we got a bit of warning, I could fill those from the kettle.

Thanks to another thread on here I bought us all head torches a few weeks ago, battery operated rather than rechargeable, and plenty of extra batteries. I may be overthinking things but better that than completely unaware.

Hi just want to ask about batteries for powering a fridge ? Do you mean a camping fridge or similar ?

GG1986 · 05/10/2022 22:00

I have 100 tealight candles!

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 05/10/2022 22:02

No.

But I do have a head torch from a mad glamping phase.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 05/10/2022 22:03

I have some candles, but don't know what else I can realistically do. Everything is electric in this house (including heating).

There's a trangia up in the loft so I could boil a very small kettle?

sagalooshoe · 05/10/2022 22:06

I imagine they'll do it in daylight hours if it's planned otherwise there'll be a lot of ambulance call outs from people falling down stairs etc.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 05/10/2022 22:10

Electric off would be more of an issue, but I don’t think this is what is expected is it?

That is exacrly what is expected! Gas shortages will mean electricity power cuts. Not gas ones. And likely between 4-7 at peak demand. They can't cut off gas. But if electric goes out your heating won't work anyway.
I have a slow cooker so I can cook all day on low energy and serve up at 6 regardless of power or not. Plus torches, candles, many blankets and board games@

effieeve · 05/10/2022 22:11

Same as brieandchilli:

I have a Berkey water filter system in the attic too in case the water system fails

LumpyandBumps · 05/10/2022 22:26

We have a wood burner, so will be warm in the lounge and can boil water/ heat soup etc.
We have candles, a couple of battery lights, and a wind up torch.
I have bought a power bank which we will keep charged prior to any power cuts, so we can use our phones.
I am assuming that the power cuts will be pre notified, and unlikely to be for more than a few hours at a time.

chocolateisavegetable · 05/10/2022 22:26

@667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast leisure battery plus an inverter
