From budget to fantasy and in various levels in between?

Budget: I have treated myself to a few of these for birthdays and Christmas but some are still only on the wish list
Car charger that is also seatbelt cutter and glass breaker.

Flint and steel.

Water purification tablets.

Disposable bbq
Head torches
Many little torches for each bag/car/

Branded Cous cous packets (rather than making your own from own spices and a large pack.)

Next level:
Good insulated travel cup.
Good flask./food flask with different sections
Wind up torch.
Disposable bbq stand.
Brighter torch and or lantern for car.
Solar lanterns (want one each for child's room)
Life straw.

Bit more expensive:
Solar power banks for kids.
New bag to take to hospital with lots of pockets for different things.
Merino wool base layers and woolly jumpers.

Expensive:
A good brand waterproof coat or two.

Fantasy:
House with good big garden and well insulated and room for lots of fruit and vegetables. Fruit cage etc.
Solar power generator.

What's on your wishlist o

We don't have an alternative either. In a flat. Any cooking would be outside. The flat is warmish at least compared to mum's house. We would have to conserve heat with clothes and blankets.

Indoor camping is an option if you have space. Heat up a smaller space with body heat. Whether that is in a small tent or a dining room table blanket tent... huddle together.

Block draughts etc.

I have everything I need short term (I think!)

Next level, I'd love:

  • A green house for year round growing
  • Solar panels on the house (we're on a waiting list of almost a year)
  • A more permanent water filtration system. I recently purchased a set that does up to 40k litres, but I'd like a fixed set-up to ensure drinking water
  • Rain water tank on garage roof

Dream I'll never do:

  • Chickens
  • Underground bunker
  • Hunting lessons (shooting, skinning etc.)

I'm happy with the house we're in, my target is to make this house as self-sufficient as possible over the next few years

BlackeyedSusan · 30/09/2022 18:02

Sounds great. @RosettaTheGardenFairy

Chickens are one of my fantasies too. Also not likely to happen.

I used to want an underground bunker. My uncle had a workshop under his bungalow that I admired.

I could put in a "cellar" but I am not sure the bloke in the flat below would be that impressed to find an upstairs neighbour taking over part of his flat! Grin

I have a camping stove, but that still relies on obtaining gas cannisters, so would like to get a Kelly kettle with hobo stove attachment.

  • Bath BOB and water filtration/life straw
  • Cob bbq
  • Window fire escape ladder and fire resistant documents bag.
  • Fuel burning stove with hot plate and oven.
  • Smallholding with renewable power source, animals, greenhouses, kitchen garden and cereal crops.
BiddyPop · 04/10/2022 08:42

I got a fire escape ladder recently for Dd ("banished" to the attic conversion), Screwfix had them in various lengths depending on the drop involved, no permanent fixings needed (hooks onto window ledge/frame).

BlackeyedSusan · 09/10/2022 11:50

I think fantasy level is going to be a campervan.

I would like a generator. We could actually afford one but I don't know where to start and it feels like an extravagance for something we might never use.

User84 · 09/10/2022 14:22

DH has however just agreed to a solar generator!!

Just thought I’d skip this in here amongst the regulars. I’m in Shetland and today we lost all comms - even emergency services were down. So for me, a ham radio is going on the list. It was a cash-only day today, but I’d imagine you’re all in that anyway.

ChocFrog · 20/10/2022 19:29

Solar panels for house.

A well! My grandad had a well in the garden and it was so cool.

Generator.

MM1972 · 06/01/2023 13:01

Always been interested in fishing.
I have bought some books on foraging.
Bought a .17hmr rifle for shooting rabbits and squirrels n’such
Joined a grey squirrel control group. At the minute we just kill them, to give the reds a chance. But could eat them in a pinch and they do in the USA.
Did deer stalking course to get a .308 rifle. I can now shoot deer and feral goats which are a problem where we are. Will also keep me safe from zombies in an apocalypse.
Bought a chainsaw for firewood.
Put some raised vegetable beds in the garden. Planning to get a greenhouse and more raised beds.
Prepared live in one room during cold weather if necessary.

BiddyPop · 18/01/2023 08:53

For those with a solar generator, are they good? Worth the money?

DH has started talking about getting one (wow!), his concept being to charge it up on the sunny days we have excess power from roof solar panels. As there's usually someone wfh now everyday, to plug it in and out at suitable times. And I have a folding solar panel for camping if it came to off-grid recharging.

But they are expensive. (Even more so here in Ireland than UK).

So are there recommendations for makes/models and any tips on powering/using them?

(Not quite sure what DH's plans are but I have a standard plug in induction hob as a backup already and would consider some caravan/12v appliances in my investment list if we did).

coffeeginandkindness · 18/01/2023 14:58

There are definitely a couple of threads like this in the property section from a good few years ago. I know because I started one under a diff username 🤣

Elpedro · 19/01/2023 21:33

It's all good

Elpedro · 19/01/2023 21:35

Food, food and water.

glasshole · 07/02/2023 22:30

Ooooh a wish list!

A back up power source for charging phones etc, something bigger than a power bank but not a generator? Like a leisure battery?

I'd like to set up an outdoor kitchen this summer. For charcoal bbqs/pizza oven , ideally with a plumbed in sink as well ( even if it's just cold water). That would come in useful for all sorts .

I'd love a log Burner in my living room and solar panels with a battery but that's £12k I just don't have right now.

minnietheantimonarchist · 08/05/2023 21:50

Just checked out 25 year long life freeze dried food. Oh well back to the drawing board...

minnietheantimonarchist · 08/05/2023 21:53

How much ...??!!

BlackeyedSusan · 09/05/2023 17:21

You don't really need 25 year long stuff...

Either everything is reasonable and you can keep rotating your stock of bog standard tins and dried grains/pasta/pulses or shit hits the fan and you are eating the stuff up well before 25 years.

It's convenient maybe, and easier to acquire and store.

OP posts:
Corrienation · 09/05/2023 17:22

Nice camping stuff

BlackeyedSusan · 09/05/2023 17:25

I hate camping, but I do love looking at really good camping stuff. (Weird!) I used to camp when my body was a lot younger.

I don’t know about these days, but in Orkney all my uncles were using CB radios with base stations at home and ‘standard’ CBs in vehicles
(Or DIY base stations rigged up at home from vehicle CBs)

The CB network was used for general day to day use with the ferry giving CB updates on his actual arrivals / departures on top of the maritime network, and they had music nights broadcast by CB

Full ham radio would give wider communications beyond the islands

BlackeyedSusan · 09/05/2023 19:46

Adds radio equipment to the wish list.
