Should I replace our electric hob with gas?

I am worried about power cuts this winter and thought I would post here for advice. I am thinking of what it was like in 1991 when we only had an electric hob and couldn’t heat food - it was quite unpleasant.

We have just moved into a house where the hob is electric. Better for internal air pollution but … is it worth us changing to gas?

In the event of a power cut, does anyone have ideas about how we would heat food?

You could buy a gas camping stove and a few gas bottles. It will be much cheaper.

You can pick up a single ring one for £20 and it uses deodorant size gas cartridges which are stil pretty cheap.

No, don’t change a perfectly good hob on a whim.
as PP said just get a camping stove for emergencies, it’s something useful to have in.
we had a power cut for a day last year when a tree took the line down. They prioritise areas so we were out longer than the local town which was only out for an hour or so. our wood burner stove was a godsend! Kept some heat in the house and we even cooked on it (I’m not suggesting you get one put in purely for this though).

I have always had a gas hob even when the oven has been electric (as it is now) . But I wouldn't go for the expense of installing one. I understand that , longer term, gas fired cooking and heating is being phased out so maybe you might have to go back to an electric hob longer term.

Thank you. I thought I was being very sensible but can now see that you are all correct.

We do go camping quite a bit, so I have all the gear. I suppose I just get that ready to go for the winter.

That's what we have done. Have a camping gas stove, kelly kettle for boiling water, and rocket stove for long duration cooking. That last two both run on twigs so we have some long term resiliance once the box of gas bottles runs out.

Next issue is lighting for power cuts...

Definitely camping stove. Many modern gear stoves won't work without mains power, anyway.

I have electric hob and camping stove

Given 70ish% of UKs electric is produced using gas, if there is no gas for electric production there is likely to be limited supply for domestic use (boilers and hobs).

I have a gas hob but have picked up a single ring gas stove, gas canisters and a whistle kettle, and also a couple of spirit burners.
