I want to try and go a week or so without using the fridge or freezer and try out what it would be like if we lost power for so long.

does anyone have any ideas?

Packet smash with stewed steak and gravy or beans and sausage with veg.
Beans on Toast (bread will be fine!)
Tomato pasta with garlic bread made from cut up ciabatta and some purée garlic.
Tinned chilli and boil in the bag rice with nachos.
nachos made on the camp fire, top with cheese (probably best first night) and low fry covered with tin foil - add the jarred salsa and sour cream etc.

Bread issue solved. How to make a mud oven the old fashioned way.

You need to get army surplus meals ready to eat (MRE).Specially designed to be light, easy to prepare and can be eaten cold.

Breakfast - porridge made with boiling water (put in a flask overnight), skimmed milk powder stirred in plus raisins/nutella/banana. UHT orange juice/black coffee/ hot choc to drink
Lunch - tinned hot dog sausage in a wrap (they last forever), soup with crackers and olives
Dinner - corned beef hash (tinned new potatoes), cowboy stew (tinned steak in gravy, baked beans, tinned pots), frittata , shelf stable gnocci (put in wide mouthed flask and pour boiling water over them, leave for 5 min) with pesto or stir in pasta sauce, nachos with tinned chilli/ refried beans/guac in a bottle.

Jack Monroes tin can cook is full of good ideas like rinsing the sauce from tinned chicken in white sauce or tinned steak

Polenta, tiny pasta or couscous all easy on a stove.

Noodle sachets from Aldi are good.

Our 'Canned to death' specials when cba to prep: Tin of green beans, tins of tuna, chick peas, mixed beans ie kidney, black eyed peas etc, tomatoes, curry sauce. Dump in pan or microwave. A sauted onion optional if energetic, fried in the tuna oil (if in oil). Serve with rice or nans. It's delicious, got it from a friend in Oz and student DD & freinds have carried on the tradition.
Corn beef stew with tomatoes, tinned corn, chilli & onions. Serve with rice.

Shelf stable gnocchi much quicker to cook than pasta. With pesto or tinned ratatouille

BeastOfBODMAS · 05/07/2022 19:56

Oh and I’d have onions, carrots, white cabbage and some oil and vinegar to make a crunchy salad/slaw - should last the best part of a week unrefrigerated

Couscous, quick cook rice, angel hair pasta, red lentils and rice noodles are all very quick to cook. Freeze dried vegetables can replace fresh veg. Oxo stock cubes are good for quick flavour and a few spice mixes to vary what you're eating. You could do a lentil Dahl with rice one night, a bean chilli with potatoes another night, pasta in tomato and veg sauce with some of that shelf stable "dried grated hard cheese" you find in supermarkets. If you're not veggie you can add lots of flavour with chorizo or bacon crumbles or cans of tuna. If it's going to be hot get powdered eggs for scramble instead of fresh eggs. I always bring powdered milk because I like my coffee milky.

I much prefer skimmed milk powder to uht or that nestle full fat one for coffee.

I use up the nestle one in white sauce, just add water and a little bit of oil.
