Logs for fire.

We cut down some trees a few years ago and so haven't really ever had to go and buy logs. However, our woodpile now is very low and I'm thinking ahead to this coming autumn and winter.

I was considering adding a small bag of logs or two to my supermarket shop each week. Tesco are selling them for £5.50 for a 16 litre bag, which is a handy way to spread the cost, but I'm guessing isn't the most cost effective way to gather up logs.

What's everyone else do for logs? What's the cheapest way of getting some assuming you don't own a chainsaw or know anyone giving away any free logs?

You can register for free surplus firewood and/or woodchips on this site: freefirewood.co.uk/. We haven't registered on there because we have enough firewood from our own land to be getting on with, but I'd def consider it if we started running low.

Local FB pages also sometimes offer free firewood in return for removing fallen trees, but you'd need your own chainsaw and transport.

We are in NI, not sure if that changes anything with rules.

Apologies. It currently only applies to England. I thought it was UK wide. Wales and Scotland are (or were) considering restrictions.

Get a suitable chainsaw that would be best option. Get some suggestions from here sawadvise.com

Ash trees grow fast and can be harvested with a decent pruning saw whilst still saplings. I know this as I had to cut down before handing back a rented house. I now have lots of wood in the garage...and no fire place.
