Hi all,

I'm new to prepping but thinking it's sensible to have a back up plan for when SHTF.

I thought I would start with the basics and work from there. In terms of water if I get a 210litre water butt to collect rain water, a life straw and some water purification tablets would that mean we would be able to have access to drinkable water?

Is there anything I haven't thought of or anything that would be good to add to my list. I was thinking of getting a couple of 5litre bottles of water which would be great for a temporary water disruption but thinking longer term you could never store all the water you would need so another solution is required.

Thanks

I'm not a prepper, per se, but I do keep supplies on hand, always have. I think water prepping is actually quite complicated and difficult. Water can go bad, it takes up loads of room, and it's heavy! I'll be interested to read about people's solutions.

I figure a water butt will be useful from an environment perspective as we are on a meter and can use it instead of our hose pipe but would give us access to rain water in emergencies. I think ideally you would boil it and purify it but hopefully someone more knowledgeable can advise.

Water butt sounds reasonable in an emergency but I would have a few of those 5L water bottles from the supermarket as well, once empty they can be refilled from other sources.

You can make a simple water purifier quite easily, here is a small one. You can scale it up as required, we keep some charcoal for just such eventualities.

It's also worth checking the map for any nearby wells or springs.

sounds good to me. water purification tablets are cheap, and small.

knowing how to purify water if necessary.
knowing where water sources are. (we are quite stuck with local sources being in a city. and the two local ones are 50% goose poo)
having something to collect water in. something to scoop/suck/pipe it out of other sources. (think drought and an empty water butt)

don't forget things like fruit juice, fizzy pop and long life milk contribute to your fluid intake. We have more of that as we drink those and keep a good stock of them as supply has been intermittent.

We have bottled water. In the event of fallout in the atmosphere you wouldn't be able to drink or wash with rainwater at all.
