Has anyone brought a power station?

After long power cuts from the storms the other week (and, of course, the threat of cyber attacks) we are looking at buying a good solar power station. Something like a Bluetti maybe. Has anyone brought one for prepping? Any recommendations or thoughts?

@Flickasmum

OP, I have a wind up radio/torch/charger which can also be powered with a small solar panel or electricity. Its been in a drawer for 2 years and I've just tried it and it all still works
I've just discovered that the sockets are the wrong size to charge anything that I've got now Sad Things change so quickly! The torch and radio still work though.

😮slightly worried you are one now @allgoneaway

After 8 days with no power after Arwen, I've just bought a Jackery power station with solar panels as DH has a cpap machine. I went for the big one to give us as much resilience as possible and because I'm a sucker for a gadget.

It only arrived yesterday and is heavy! The booklet advises charging it every 3 months when not in use.

I'm going to spend the weekend testing it. Grin

@gogohm I’ve got a kelly kettle which doesn’t need gas as I’m always a bit twitchy about blowing the bloody doors off the first time I light a camping stove.

The kettle works as a chimney and you just burn shit at the bottom. It’s supposed to work even better in the wind, but I’ve not yet been able to simulate a nuclear blast to test it properly.

I have a UPS I bought years ago to protect my laptop as I live in a power-cut area.

Can live without leccy but draw the line at lack of hot water for coffee.

It's Bought not brought, they are two very different words! @allgoneaway

Unnecessarily rude. Do you point out every single typo/grammer/spelling mistake on the whole of MN? It's perfectly clear what the OP means.
ddshocker · 05/03/2022 11:01

@Flickasmum If I did that I would be here all day. Grin

I wouldn't say it's unnecessary at all. They are two very different words. Just helping OP out!

ROWLE · 05/03/2022 11:12

Just stop @ddshocker

I'm sure she'll be forever grateful.

Lily2075 · 05/03/2022 14:38

By the way, it's bought, not brought.

By the way RTFT.

@allgoneaway the large Bluetti 2000Wh box says it weighs 36.6kg, no wonder I couldn't move it much.

The small 500wh is much more portable, it is the size of a large boxy radio and has handles to lift it.

Would regular rooftop solar panels continue to function and provide the house wi the power in the event of a power cut? Or would they be screwed by being attached to the grid?

BlackeyedSusan · 05/03/2022 18:34

I have a fondness for Radcliffe on Soar. Went on a tour about 40 years ago. It used to mark nearly home.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/03/2022 18:36
@thedancingbear hmm, hadn't thought about waste disposal. Could stick it in my garden waste bin and put some grass cuttings on top. They never check.
Surely the eerie green glow would give it away!

misscockerspaniel · 06/03/2022 12:26

Does anyone know if they can be left outside and be switched on 24/7?

I have a fish pond and it costs a fortune to run the pumps etc.

SeedsSeedsSeeds · 09/03/2022 09:24

We are looking into installing solar panels and some level of battery storage. Seems silly to get them and not have a battery, or we would just be providingthe grid energy. Our neighbour has panels and loves them. They think it will take about 10 years to break even from the installation cost and then they have free energy. With the possibility of having an electric car in future, it makes sense to diversify energy source if the sums add up.

@BewareTheBeardedDragon unless you had battery storage it wouldn't work in a power cut.

CushionSpiral · 09/03/2022 22:52

@Bobbobbobbing which one/size did you buy as were in a similar position with the CPAP and want to look into getting something.

CushionSpiral · 10/03/2022 15:47

Anyone got any views on the atom pro vs jacket let for the same price for running CPAP?

Jacket? Jackery 240!

So any comments on the atom pro vs jackery 240?

Bobbobbobbing · 10/03/2022 20:44

@CushionSpiral I went for the biggest 1 because I could afford it and I wanted to be able to keep phones etc going as well as the cpap.

Are you a member of the Hope2sleep support group on FB? I read a few threads on there where people recommended the atom. I think the type of cpap can impact on how much battery time you get. The hope2sleep website had some figures for the various machines.

CushionSpiral · 10/03/2022 20:49

Yes I saw the post with the figures and the group recommending the atom, but then thought had better check that the jackery for the extra £20 wasn’t better.
