Hi, delurking after nearly two years getting helping helpful info from here that helped with shielding and general preparedness, so thank you.

I live with my elderly, disabled Dad and I'm getting a bit spooked at the extent of power cuts, particularly as where we live we can get snowed in for a few days over winter, even with a 4x4. Sod's Law that the power cut would coincide with the snow so I couldn't drive him to my sister's house or a hotel to get warm.

No open fireplace at home and complicated architecture means not suitable for a wood burner. Can anyone recommend some kind of (calorgas?) heater that's safe to use indoors please?

I already have a camping stove, hot water bottles, hand warmers, sleeping bags etc, but his health conditions mean that won't be enough to keep him warm and well in midwinter for longer than a couple of hours.

Thanks.

Have a look at Mr Heaters which use propane but make sure that you also buy a carbon monoxide detector if you don't already have one. You can get calor gas heaters which use butane but I know that there has been a shortage of butane bottles and you may not be able just to buy a full one without returning one which is empty and a carbon monoxide detector is a must again.

Thanks @Diversion, I have a propane hob in my (unheated) horsebox so am all over the carbon monoxide risk and I ended up getting my last bottle from a boatyard as supply was scarce.

But I'm a bit overwhelmed by the choice of heaters and wondered if anyone had bought one and rates theirs?

Hi noidea we have the calor gas Provence Heater which dh has in his garden shed office. It's economical to use and heats the space up quickly, so normally on for and hour in the morning and an hour or two in the afternoons. We've not had a problem getting the gas from order to delivery is normally 3 days. Dh does have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted. But we've not had any issues.

@educatingrati thanks, I'll have a look at it

Be aware that burning any kind of unflued gas appliance indoors at this time of year will create loads of condensation.

Also both propane and butane bottles are in short supply.

You can sign up to having a vulnerable person in the house with your electric company. They send you alerts and if you need heating you can get in touch and report as an emergency.

Already done that thanks, although I saw a lot of posts after storm arwen complaining that it didn't seem to make a difference. But no stone unturned!
