I live in BC, Canada on Vancouver Island.
A pretty well established place, great links, lots of stores, and so on.

Then we got hit with a once in a century rain storm, and suddenly five highways are washed out, rail lines damaged, lower mainland Vancouver cut off (so no access for trucks to Canada's biggest port) so nothing can get to the port to be shipped to the island .
Some stuff is being routed through the States, but you have to have a negative COVID test to be able to cross back into Canada. Some of their roads are pooched too!
That is adding delays to anything trying to get through.

I am grateful that I prep, so I can leave what supplies are there in the stores for others, and that I can help my immediate neighbours if they need it too.

"but, but, but, surely you have neighbours/friend/relative that can pop to the shops for you...." in their amphibious tank

umm, no, hang on, try another one...

..." you know you could just buy some of the other brand of the stuff on the shelf and cook something else..." Do they have farm shops over there in Canada? (other than pick your own cherries, here is a ladder for you to use to do that, which is totally not done in the UK) apparently, farm shops are the answer instead of prepping.

perhaps the, if everything else fails, one...

"You're scaremongering and it is all your fault that you panic bought and caused all the shortages..."

Hmm

here's hoping your supplies last you and they can sort out resupply routes soon. Really hoping you don't get anymore climate change extreme weather as you have had more than your fair share lately. )

oh I forgot, the "it'll be fiiiiine" (oh no, that's a Brexit one, my mistake)

Gingerkittykat · 18/11/2021 02:42

It's terrifying how quickly people get cut off.

How long will your supplies last?

I have a couple of weeks worth of food in the house in case of self isolating. My village was also completely cut off during the Beast of the East storms a few years ago so maybe I should do more to prepare for things like that.

And this is after a once in a lifetime heat dome. Poor BC!

Seafog · 18/11/2021 04:00

We have enough to be comfortable for a few weeks, but after that it will be needs must.

We have had a rough go of it weather wise, but so have many places in the world. It does bring climate change into sharp focus, and makes you really think about how much we, as a whole, take just in time delivery systems for granted.

Very simple prepping is not going below half a tank.

fallfallfall · 20/11/2021 05:56

oh for heavens sake.
how absurd. equally in bc and your post is so fake.
fuel food is in fine supply, transport all rerouted but proceeding. road and rail clearing going well enough.
one of the first things the province did was send fuel trucks to the island.
and the idea of cut off again fake news. port hardy to prince rupert, prince rupert to kamloops, kamloops to the south or east nothing cut off except a small section of the province.

merritt and princeton have been hit hard certainly not "the island".

as for panic shopping 24 hours later and all the shops were stocked with produce rerouted from alberta.
climate change??? political climate change!!! abbottsford was a lake that was only drained 100 years ago the dyke and pump station never upgraded despite increased population (which btw should never have been allowed to build on an artificially dried out lake).
be a typical canadian and stock your pantry.

Be a typical Canadian and stock your pantry

Well isn't that what @Seafog is saying they did?!
Hope you're still ok OP!

Seafog · 01/12/2021 20:07

I am, thank you @Mischievous12
We still have fuel restrictions in place, but there is now a steady supply, so that is great.
One of the good things to come out of it is that there is now talk of a rail link in the future up to the middle of the island, so that the bottom of the island has a back up route for goods to get through.

That's a nice update @Seafog Smile
