Preppers

Any stepping up given the news coverage recently?

I admit to being a little worried. I don't believe half of what is in the media HOWEVER I popped to my little town Nisa last week and they have notices apologising for shortages in stock items.

The manager told me they generally have 800 crates delivered weekly but only had 300 this week which was shocking for them. My local Aldi on the other hand seemed fully stocked (but I am aware of tricks used to appear so when not despite shortages).

I am just wondering what established preppers might be concentrating on for the coming months?

Over the summer I used up things, and bought some more, so all in all I have kept at pretty much the same level recently, perhaps a bit less.
I probably had a bit too much anyway, so feel comfortable where we are currently.

It seems to me, and I could be wrong, that shortages are somewhat geographical. Where we are it is not too bad. What whose section is not there one week, seems to be there the next. And if you really need something, another supermarket seems to have it.

The only thing I have consistently noticed for weeks as being in shorter supply, is anything cat related.

@gibletjane

If I stock up now isn't that going to cause a problem & be no different to panic buying
Yes, probably. Prepping is about stocking up when times aren't tough. Anyone stockpiling based on current headlines is panic buying.

I'm trying to clear down my freezer a little as it was packed full of redcurrants! Made half into a jelly last week, still have another half to go, which I might mix with raspberries as the summer crop of those was really poor.

Cat food is being a bit problematic, can't really stock up more than a week in advance because they get through it so fast!

The C02 issue is pretty awful..running down the freezer ,(also full of soft fruit.. )

Will pick up chicken where I can.

I think I still have about a month's worth of supplies. Am on tenterhooks at the moment as we will be moving house shortly and I wanted to stock up in earnest then, but it looks like I'm too late.

You aren't too late, when you move look for the nearest international supermarket, Pak store or Medina. The new seasons tinned tomatoes, tinned & dried beans are in and the prices are quite low. They also stock family sized boxes of washing powder, fabric softener, loo roll and kitchen roll.

I will have to do that, I don't want to add to any panic buying as I've been so diligent prepping, but the house move has buggered me right up. I plan to have Christmas done by the end of October, though.

I continue to maintain my larder. One is none and two is one.
I'm working hard on maxing out my allotment growing potential.
Trying to improve my firewood stocks.
And trying to save for a rainy day.
Also maintaining a medicine cupboard.

EzzieLove · 26/09/2021 20:36

Did a good stock take and tidy up of my larder today (plus other tinned stuff I keep randomly around the house). I wrote expiration dates clearly on everything and put them in order, made a list of low and missing items for shop tomorrow. Hubby cleared out old tomato plants from the greenhouse ready to make room for the strawberry plants. All in all a good days work. Any ideas on winter crops we could grow? Going to sort out winter car preps this week. Reminder to all!

SpindleWorld · 26/09/2021 20:45

I got so used to prepping during the run-up to brexit I just tick along now, topping up things I know I need. It was useful when I was told to 'shield' for a long time.

My main issue is my new GP constantly stopping my meds without notice. I don't why she thinks I'll suddenly be cured of an incurable disease overnight. I predict a lot more of this in primary care, to cut down on waste - which there is - but GPs are supposed to talk to patients, not keep cutting off their meds. It's so hard to plan for.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/09/2021 17:51

Winter crops @EzzieLove I googled and found some ideas. Many are plant now for earlier spring crops. I have just planted perpetual spinach in pots.

I have planted mint and parsley in pots hoping they grow. (Split and repotted from Asda so we will see if they grow)

I bought my triffid potted courgette indoors a the poor wee thing was too cold. It much prefers my warm flat. (Living room hit 29 degrees today) Confused (gets cold in winter though) it has 4 baby courgettes developing since Friday.

Indoor planting on the windowsil may be the way to go.

UnsolicitedDickPic · 27/09/2021 19:48

@BlackeyedSusan We've had most success indoors - managed to get tomatoes and chillies in the house, though not admittedly in vast quantities. We're moving to a new house soon so that success may not continue! Hopeful though, as there's more space so I planned to expand our efforts once we were settled in.

EzzieLove · 27/09/2021 22:25

Thanks, spinach sounds good. We have sooo many chilies as DH is obsessed about growing them. Good tip, pick and freeze them whole then just take out of the freezer what you need for each meal and slice finely whilst still frozen. Works a treat. X

AdoraBell · 27/09/2021 23:33

I watched a Jamie Oliver programme, he grated frozen chilli over a salad.

We’re packing to move, not sure when it will be though 🤦‍♀️ Just accepted an offer on our house, reserved a new build, it all depends on the searches, contracts and the buyer not changing their minds.

We need to run the freezer down over the next month.
