How do you (prepper people) prep/store water?

I think of myself as prepper-lite I just like to be well stocked with things we always use regularly and organised and have plenty of supplies. I was a lot more stocked/prepped and organised before a house move but am restarting now.

How do you prep emergency water supplies?

In my old house I had a pack of 12 x 1L bottles of water stashed away for emergency use (I guess thinking water being cut off in summer maybe?) but when I moved I noticed it has gone out of date - not sure what that even means, if water can go out of date - so I’m using it up for pet drinking water now.

How much of what type do you proper prepper people keep in and how do you organise/rotate it?

I have water but have now switched to glass bottles as I believe the plastic leaks into the water. Think it's handy to have just incase.

Yeah I don’t like the plastic either for environmental reasons although at least it’s recyclable.

Can you buy water in glass bottles?

Absolutely ☺️

Purification tablets. I've also looked at low-tech filters.

The biggest issue with PET bottles is that they're not airtight. It's not so much that water spoils, but it definitely loses it's appeal once stored for long periods.

I have 2*5l plastic bottles for ultra emergencies.

I also have a 10l plastic camping barrel to fill from the tap if we get any notice.

I also have a rainwater butt in the back garden that usually have some water in it and has been used for flushing toilets (using a bucket) when needed in the past.

And the cold water storage tank in the attic holds a fair amount too, we just ration that but can be used for cooking, washing up, washing people etc.

Actually, I am due to do "make your own filter from a coke bottle, old pair of tights and sand" with my Cub Scouts next month as well, so that may help in future🤣🤣🤣

Had a quick look in Tesco yesterday when I was doing a shop and all the water was plastic bottles.

Remembered also I have a UV sterilising light stick thing that you can stick in a glass of water and it kills all microorganisms. So once I have some water butts set up, could always use them if need be!!! I panic-bought the UV light at the start of corona when it was really unclear how significant fomite transmission would be (turns out: not really!). I used to have one when backpacking and it was useful.

Think I’ll replace the 12x1L with some 5Ls for real SHTF and just keep a note of the use by. They last a couple of years I guess.

I have a few 2l bottles. Some is out of date now and would be used to flush the loo if necessary.
I have a full water butt and some purifying tablets, and I have a purifying straw too. I'd like to get some more water in glass bottles.
I also have 2 plastic water barrels. If necessary they could be filled from a local river.
That's the extent of my shtf planning really. If it got very bad we're all fucked anyway, I feel. Mine is more for short lived emergencies.

We filled empty wine bottles with water and rotate them. Last 6 months aparently but could be used after in an emergency for cooking, flushing etc

Maria1982 · 04/04/2021 19:28

I have I think 2 x 6litre packs of water. In extreme situations I don’t think I will care if it has expired/some of the plastic has leaked into water (not ideal though).
Otherwise water butt, and purification tablets or a filter from camping situations.

Sideorderofchips · 03/05/2021 21:57

I have about 30l of water stored. And 200 water purification tablets

When (if! Grin ) I ever get my sailing boat, a reverse osmosis watermaker is on my list of upgrades I want to do (as well as solar generation, large battery bank, preferably electric cooking using that solar, etc). But if I had that, and the boat moored locally, even if I wasn't living on it - I could run the WM, fill the tanks with fresh water made from seawater, and then decant that water to jerrycans to bring it home (the opposite way most boaters need their jerry jugs - to refill the boat water tanks from taps on the land).

If only @BiddyPop! Grin

@jajabanks could you tell us some brands of still water that are sold in glass please? I haven't seen any locally, and water is something I've considered storing for emergencies.
