I have been lurking on the Westminsters thread and they are talking about Britain starting to follow WTO rules from April.
Is anybody continuing to prep for this? There do seem to be shortages of odd things already. I think we don't notice it as gaps in the shelves as such, as they just fill in with other things. I only notice it when I go with a shopping list. Normally I buy meat pouches for my cat but there were only tins. I wanted lemongrass as well. It hasn't been in stock for weeks. There was quite a (socially distant) huddle in that aisle with a few people not being able to find what they wanted. I hope it doesn't get bad.

I think it's only prudent to have sensibly stocked kitchen, bathroom and cleaning cupboard.
Nothing has changed for me, I was like this pre pandemic and suspect will be this way forever.
Only thing I did differently was I put more into my stocks and shares ISA.

Out of interest what changes do they think will happen?

BlackeyedSusan · 11/03/2021 22:43

there was some talk of it being postponed until october/january now, but as the government has decided one sided, it might not happen as the government wants it to.

BlackeyedSusan · 11/03/2021 22:43

they are introducing health checks on all plant or animal products.

I don't really understand how we can keep waving imports through. I thought it was against WTO rules. I assumed WTO were just turning a blind eye to it in the short term.

I know, EU are discussing legal action.

I would rather them come in in April instead of a random date when legal action was taken by someone. Easier to plan. Pissed off with always being on standby.

Sunshinedrops85 · 13/03/2021 17:27

I started in august of the previous year and it's become normal for us so we're still continuing.

KateKeeper · 13/03/2021 17:31

I still have extra stocks and will probably always do so, without getting to the point of hoarding. Like blackeyedsusan I'm fed up with being on standby. I really don't like clutter so feeling the need to do this is irritating me quite a lot.

I would like to get back to standard levels of prep rather than enhanced level of prep.

oh well.

I’ve just read the Westminstenders thread too - it’s my go-to - and I think I’ll ramp up the prepping again. I prepped for a no-deal Brexit, which helped during lockdown, but have pretty much depleted my stocks now. Is there anything in particular you’d suggest prepping, as in what’s likely to be scarce? I will go for the basics like pasta, canned toms, beans TP, sanpro, otc Medicine etc as they always get used, but I’d love to know if anyone can foresee a shortage of a particular thing that it may be useful to have.

RhubarbTea · 15/03/2021 16:56

Weirdly, I got the instinct a few days ago to start prepping again, so I'll make sure I have plenty of meals and loo rolls in, as well as oat milk, cleaning products etc... It is tricky when you don't know what is the thing that might be hit, you just know there will be something.

UnsolicitedDickPic · 27/03/2021 21:35

@RhubarbTea How strange, me too! Hence why I visited the board tonight. I think there's just so much uncertainty. I got a lot done in my last stretch of prepping; lots of things in place now, I'm just working on finances. It's bloody stressful though, isn't it?

Katekeeper · 31/03/2021 07:21

I forgot I had posted this. Still none the wiser really. I have enough to tide me over if there are problems at any point.

oh well.

We decided we are going to keep more supply generally, going forward. In our opinion, fwiw, inflation in general, could become a big issue.

Interestingly on my todo list today is to go through what I call my brexit cupboard. Sick and tired of knowing there’s a cupboard unopened full of stuff and now need to check dates as some is from pre history brexit alarums.

Not sure if it is linked but some of the things I stocked up on in a minor way I pretty much stopped eating during unexpected lockdown year. Capers and olives and gherkins type things. Even tinned tomatoes. Not really sure what I’ve been eating this past year (!) gone right off pasta even ffs.
