NC. Have been on this board lots since the start of the pandemic and don't want posts linked. I started off in Feb getting really worried and came onto these boards for information, advice and ideas. All of which I got in a considered and measured way, and which for the time I was grateful for. I can't help think now though that it was such a load of bollocks though (the prepping, not aimed at any individuals on here). I got myself into a state, spent a fortune on stuff. Water purifying tablets? Out of date, in the bin. Medicine items? Out of date, in the bin. Oxymeter? Unused, waste of money. Nebulizer? Unused, fucking hundreds of pounds. I could weep when I think about how much I spent. Good wise, I bought very little I won't eat but I don't think I can look at another piece of bloody cous cous. I don't think any of this was helpful to a healthy state of mind for me, it just gave me a false sense of control despite contribiting to me being really fucking anxious. At least my shopping bills this month have been slim.

What's the big deal about an oximeter please?

womanity · 18/02/2021 17:47

Remember back in Feb and March last year we knew it was coming, but we didn’t know what ‘it’ was. We didn’t know if it would infect us all, kill 30%, anything.

Even the government planners were looking at 1/5 of us being off work at any one time, which could represent a very real risk to power/water/transport/safety/law enforcement/food supplies.

Which is what I tell myself every time I see the bags of uneaten Huel. 😀

K9medic · 18/02/2021 21:25

Pulse oxometers give you a guide to the oxygen level of the blood, their not perfect and they do have limitations, but still useful bit of kit for the price of a resonable one.

The reason their popular for covid is a normale healthy person shows a level of 95% to 98% oxygen (there are old miners around here who function at 88% with copd) but there are cases of covid patients being down in the 45 - 55 % bracket, at this level.i would be requesting blue lights and a quick trip to A&E.

Purplerayhan · 18/02/2021 23:05

Ah right, thanks

PrincessTuna · 19/02/2021 09:47

I know what you mean. This past year has definitely taught me the power of common sense. Buy a bit more of stuff you like, rather than the astronaut food username543 bulk bought on offer.

March 2020 was really tough. It was all new territory and completely unpredictable. People on here were speculating about looting etc. Its easy to apply hindsight and think its ludicrous. I think be kind to yourself but be aware of the panic mode we can fall into.

lughnasadh · 19/02/2021 13:47

But ...wasn't it fun?

I lost nothing by playing along. And tinned potoatoes are great! Grin

Purplerayhan · 19/02/2021 16:36

Not fun for me. Quite stressy thinking have I got enough, when do I stop etc. Looking back o think it took me down to a dark place the.

fireplaceburning · 19/02/2021 22:42

@Purplerayhan I've bought an oximeter. There's been a bit on the news about how useful they are and they are relatively cheap so I'm glad I've got it.

My initial prep was for brexit but turned into covid food stores. I have loads but try and rotate. I think the one thing I won't use is a packet of smash 🤣

Sideorderofchips · 20/02/2021 22:06

Having been a prepper for a long time it's peace of mind. When people were panic buying in the shops I was able to stay at home and not worry

BlackeyedSusan · 20/02/2021 22:19

And there is the implementation of the rules beginning in April. Watch out for more disruption then.

What the what now?

Which rules?

LifeExperience · 20/02/2021 23:23

You paid hundreds of dollars for a nebulizer? Here in the states they cost $70. I know because I have asthma, got covid, and have been using it for over two months to fight off pneumonia. If you have an asthmatic child, keep it. At some point, dc may need it, not necessarily for covid.

LifeExperience · 20/02/2021 23:25

The pulse oximeter ($50) has also come in handy. I was given guidelines by my pulmonologist for when and how to check myself and when to go to the hospital, if necessary. Thankfully it never got to that point. These things don't go bad, so I would keep them.

The rediscovery of tinned potatoes with salad cream was about the best thing to come out of this whole mess!! Proper childhood memories Grin

Tinned peaches and custard here. 😀

BlackeyedSusan · 20/02/2021 23:55

Government are just waving things in without the checking procedures at present (against WTO rules as they are treating EU differently to the rest of the world) in April they start more checks, then again further implementation on 1st of June. Thus we have two more deadlines where things can potentially get fucked up.

I am particularly pissed off as I was hoping to get rid of some of the pile of tins by eating and not replacing. Built up extra last bit in November/December just in case now keeping stocked up rather than reducing. We have had a period of self isolating as kids came in contact with a positive case.

It's been steamed ginger puddings that have been my favourite- with custard (made with uht, perfectly passable). The children won't/can't eat them, so husband and I have been enjoying them. My waistline isn't so grateful Wink
haba · 21/02/2021 00:01

DD is loving tinned mango though!

Oh. Gotcha. I was winding down supplies. Will stop winding down.

Thanks!

There are posters on the Westminstenders thread who explain it better.

popsly · 21/02/2021 15:55

I always wondered what happened to stocks since shortages didn't really materialise & some posters seemed obsessed.
However the oximeter is handy.

You just start eating them. Your shopping list is smaller for a while. (Or you rotate them so they don’t go out of date and you are ready for whatever is coming next...)
popsly · 21/02/2021 16:06

Yes but there was some preppers who had huge stocks to last months & of food that they didn't necessarily want. I believe some must have ended up in the bin.

What's coming next though? In reality if it's war or an apocalypse you're not going to be calmly browsing your tins choosing tonight's dinner are you?

I have months worth. I rotate it. Why would anyone bin food?

Last night I chose dinner from my tins, chopped Tom, kidney beans, spices, add veggie mince from my chest freezer. Served with wraps and salad from my very cheap weekly shop.

Do you only use fresh/short dated food when cooking?

popsly · 21/02/2021 16:59

Then I'm not talking about you am I?

Why would anyone bin food?

I can't answer that, I just know that as a nation we bin food. Are you saying we don't?

Do you only use fresh/short dated food when cooking

Why is how I cook relevant?
