Hello 🙂

I have been prepping for a while for Brexit. The only problem is having enough storage space!! My house is tiny and already filled with toys, books etc (we did a massive Marie Kondo exercise in the spring lockdown but still, so much remains...).

We also have a pathetically small, old and leaky fridge. Hope to get a new one next payday but might be too late by then!

Thinking of storing some fresh fruit and veg outside after Christmas but our big problem round here is mice - has anyone found anything sufficiently mouse proof for storage?

My top tip is Nido milk. I have been practising with it and found it is good in porridge and pasta sauces - my fussy family haven't noticed it at all! I have even used it a couple of months out of date and it's been fine.

was more thinking about putting bog roll or cleaning stuff behind the bath panel with the spiders...

WitchFindersAreEverywhere · 13/12/2020 15:56

I’ve got tins and jars in the playhouse in plastic, lidded crates.
Non-edible household supplies in boxes in the attic.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/12/2020 17:45

oh God, this is getting ridiculous now... what are we like? what the fuck has this country come to that we are stockpiling fucking food in the play house? (or behind the sofa, etc,etc etc)

wfae: not a criticism of you by the way. just wtf

WitchFindersAreEverywhere · 13/12/2020 17:54

I’m the only one short enough to fit in the playhouse now, so I might as well use it. Grin
As for stores and stashes, I’ve always been like that. Well, at least for the last 40 years.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 13/12/2020 18:30

Thanks @indignatio I'm going to try the nets in the shed roof idea - can't hurt and frozen veggies take up so much room in the freezer.

MarshmallowManiac · 15/12/2020 15:57

It is getting ridiculous isn't it Blackeyed I was just eyeing up behind the sofa for storage. Bloody government putting us through this lark. Must remember not to vote for them again, OH NO DIDN'T VOTE FOR THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE!!

BlackeyedSusan · 16/12/2020 23:55

Just pissed off with trying to make decisions on what we need and how to Tetris the freezer.

MarshmallowManiac · 17/12/2020 00:18

OMG totally pissed off, just constantly thinking won't have enough. Sad

BlackeyedSusan · 17/12/2020 08:50

Logic tells me I have enough. Maybe not every thing we want. But....

BlackeyedSusan · 17/12/2020 08:51

Yeah still pissed off.

Whenwillow · 17/12/2020 08:58

I'm pissed off that we're having to think about it. Have a loft and plenty of cupboards here so space isn't an issue really but even so - I really don't like having stuff around just in case
I realise I am privileged to be able to stash a bit so I'm trying not to grumble.
But I'm quite annoyed at feeling compelled to stash extra in case I am right and friends and family need to avail themselves of some of it. These friends and family who still think it's project fear and won't listen to my gentle attempts to persuade them otherwise Sad

I was quite happy with our supermarket system just as it was.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/12/2020 11:31

me too.

DoubleGloucester · 18/12/2020 19:27

My cool box arrived from Argos today. It didn't arrive in packaging and dh was a bit wtf.... Oh well!
Do we think leeks and carrots would last in it?

OP posts:
Whenwillow · 18/12/2020 19:34

I am going for leeks, carrots, swede and cabbage in mine Smile

BlackeyedSusan · 18/12/2020 20:12

Got a cool bag but not thought to use it. Ooops!

MarshmallowManiac · 19/12/2020 00:42

Think I am going to invest in a cool box/bag can't hurt can it.

DoubleGloucester · 19/12/2020 10:22

@Whenwillow sounds like a good selection!

MarshmallowManiac · 19/12/2020 12:06

Yes all the veg produced in England Grin don't forget potatoes, parsnips and kale Whenwillow

Whenwillow · 19/12/2020 12:25

I have an enormous sack of potatoes! Sadly unable to check before purchasing them and some are sprouting already. Maybe I should grab some compost and a bin....
Tomorrow's job is making leek and potato soup for freezer.
I have a few parsnips. We love them! They really make a stew I think. And delicious roasted with potatoes for a roast. Mmmmm Smile
Does kale keep? Not something I buy often. I think I'll not hoard that but will buy it if it's available.
We have some Chinese leaf lettuce which seems to last ages in the fridge.

MarshmallowManiac · 19/12/2020 12:45

Do you keep them in the kitchen Whenwillow maybe try dark places like a cupboard under stairs, shed, garage, these all seem to work for me. Smile

Whenwillow · 19/12/2020 12:50

Yes they are in the shed - they were like it when I bought them. I haven't rummaged though - may just be the ones at the top. They were bought from the butcher so should have been cool there, but I don't know how long they'd had them.

Whenwillow · 19/12/2020 12:52

I was only semi jesting about putting the sprouting ones in compost, the ones we cooked the night I bought them were fine, just needed thicker peeling.
I don't have green fingers but spuds are said to be easy to grow in a bin.

Summerstorms · 19/12/2020 12:58

I read somewhere that storing apples with potatoes slows down the sprouting process (does the opposite with other fruit and veg though)

Whenwillow · 19/12/2020 13:05

Oh, interesting. Thank you @summerstorms. Last winter I stored apples and onions (separately) in boxes of sawdust in the shed. That worked well.

MarshmallowManiac · 19/12/2020 13:12

Definitely don't store them with bananas, they escalate their ripening.
