Preppers

Do other people think you're being OTT?

I am far from a 'proper' prepper, but over the last year since Brexit was first supposed to happen I've been gradually building up stocks so that we can be self sufficient if we need to isolate for 2 weeks, and to see us through the first few weeks of Brexit when it does happen. Nothing dramatic, just a couple of boxes of extra tins / packets under the bed, stuff to make bread, some long life milk, and trying to ensure I have a spare of most things to avoid having to shop immediately if we run out of something important (like coffee!).

However, absolutely no-one else I know is doing this (these are people with the means and space to stock up if they wanted to, I totally understand a lot of people can't). My boss yesterday pissed himself laughing when I mentioned my Brexit box and planning ahead for the shitshow that I'm fairly sure January is going to be. I got the impression he thinks I should be wearing a tinfoil hat. My friends are all like "well the shops will be open won't they". The only person I know that is on board is my elderly mum, but thats because she wasn't prepared for the first lockdown and got thoroughly fed up of not having different things to eat, so she's now stocked up her cupboards.

Have you discussed your prepping with friends and family, are they doing it too or do they think you're a bit odd?!

It's a bit bloody late to start now though. Hence the warnings not to stockpile. I did like the advice to carry on buying what you normally buy....which in my case is stuff for Brexit..

There is no more fucking room though.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/12/2020 21:46

Arse. Forgot ex's toothpaste. And probably mine too.

Dugee · 21/12/2020 08:12

I've been to Tesco this morning. Frozen veg was low. Fresh ok, but the impact of closing Dover not hitting the shelves yet.

DailyPotion · 21/12/2020 08:15

I think the last thing you want if it does all kick off, is to have let anyone know you have decent stocks in. I haven't told a soul, so I don't know what anyone else thinks.

AuntieStella · 21/12/2020 09:35

I'm another who hasn't talked about prepping in RL, but have been lurking, and occasionally posting, in this topic.

It meant I have a level of resilience that I am happy with.

My big online order for Christmas is due to arrive tomorrow. I realise that there might be more missing/substituted than I would hope for, but I have enough in the house to 'do' Christmas anyhow, and keep us going for a while after that.

These threads have been very helpful, as they've turned my attention back to the state if my cupboards throughout the summer, when buying just a few extra items a week has built up to a good supply - particularly non-food items that are unlikely to be prioritised through port queues but I really wouldn't want to be without

Dugee · 21/12/2020 10:45

We're ok until the end of Feb but if I can't get any more fresh after today then fresh will run out by the end of next week. Freezer is bursting at the seams, as are cupboards and wardrobes.

Dugee · 21/12/2020 10:46

As others have said, no one in rl knows about my stash.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/12/2020 10:52

Now it is wait and see. Use what we have. Learn to adjust to a different style of cooking and eating.

Dontlickthetrolley · 21/12/2020 11:36

3 people in rl know I have a stockpile, but they also have them too so not worried, no food out in my house other than the Christmas food so not obvious, not that we're allowed visitors!

DontBeShelfish · 21/12/2020 12:49

I did advise people way back last year to start prepping but they thought I was bonkers, so I stopped talking about it. One or two people have mentioned it since, and I've downplayed it.

bellinisurge · 21/12/2020 13:17

Also avoid mentioning it in real life and downplay it with family. On here I've been called all sorts . But fuck those idiots

Alexandernevermind · 21/12/2020 13:44

Is prepping to this extent just a nicer way of saying hoarding. A couple of weeks worth of supplies is fine and acceptable, any more is hoarding.

AldiIsla · 21/12/2020 14:13

Behold. @Alexandernevermind is here to state the official rules of prepping. Quick, everyone, gather round while they impart their knowledge and wisdom.

HuggedTheRedwoods · 21/12/2020 14:14

Bellini I'm sure those of us that have gleaned some great tips from your posts on here far outweight the idiots. Sticks and stones and all that.

I'd also bet a fair few of those idiots have changed their stance about having a little extra stock in after this past year too.

Not sure if it's hoarding if it's all going to be used or passed on to a food bank? Hardly like a dragon sitting on a pile of gold. Hmm
MarshmallowManiac · 21/12/2020 16:38

You always get one don't you. It's quite funny to watch them pop up just like Brexit deadlines. Grin

StuntEgg · 21/12/2020 16:46

I've never gone into much detail about what I have, just suggested to others that it's something we should all think about. Most of them scoffed and said it's all scaremongering. I did tell one friend about my soup stash, and she thought it was hilarious. She recently asked me if I still had 50 tins of soup under my sofa, and I truthfully replied no. It's 120 tins now. She'd split her sides if I told her that though. She still thinks the shit will get nowhere near the fan and has made no preparations.

Imsayingnothing · 21/12/2020 17:06

Just reading the last few posts about if anyone knows about your stash, good to see a few people saying nobody knows about theirs, that's the best way. On another note, should things get very bad, you might be interested in watching a video on YouTube by fss survival about how to avoid any confrontation around people asking you to give them stuff. It can lead to a whole host of problems giving out items of food when people don't have any. Please if any of you are interested and get a chance do watch it, it's a fairly recent one.

bellinisurge · 21/12/2020 18:10

Thanks @HuggedTheRedwoods

Dugee · 21/12/2020 20:00

@Alexandernevermind

Normally I'd agree with you but this shitshow of a year has demonstrated that I need to look after my family - I'm quite happy that we can now avoid queues (at best) and riots (at worst), as we will all be well fed and safe at home.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/12/2020 20:24

Ah well belini, that another name you can add to the bingo board.

Hoarder.

Not as bad as some of the others.

We have more or less done all we can. Sil knows about food but is too far away to fetch much. Ex knows. He has his own stash.

That's it. Most is mostly out of sight.

Ridcully82 · 21/12/2020 20:26

Better half and mil have been good naturedly laughing at my pantry last few months:last 24 hours better half thinks it's brilliant

Trackandtrace · 21/12/2020 21:57

Imsayingnothing can you link to the video please.

Diversion · 21/12/2020 22:37

Got into work this morning and colleague mentioned the current issues regarding trucks queing up etc. She said "you warned me this was going to happen, how did you know?" I told her I had a crystal ball and suggested that she go and buy some fresh veg on her way home. I was in Tesco at 7 .15am to buy flowers and might have just bought some additional fresh veg to bung in the dehydrator.

JingsMahBucket · 22/12/2020 01:39

@Diversion
She said "you warned me this was going to happen, how did you know?"

People are so silly. We’ve been screaming about logistics and import systems for the past four years and now they act shocked. 🙄 Oh well.
