Ok probably not a preppers post as such but I thought you would be the best people to ask Grin

Following the last lockdown, I have found that buying ‘ big quantities was probably better than supermarket shop for a lot items.
Eg we’ve started buying flour in 15kg bags. We make all our bread (1 500g loaf a day) so it goes quickly. The flour is better quality and cheaper than supermarket stuff.

I’d like to do that for other products (coconut milk comes to mind because I find it hard to find a brand that is of good quality), canned tomatoes (we seem to using a lot of it) etc....
Same with spices (the plan would be to buy them with a couple of family members and share).

My question is: do you know of any good websites where you can buy in bulk like this?

I've just a few weeks ago bought bulk big tubs of herbs and spices from sous chef website and they are great. They come in different sizes but I bought the big tubs because we cook everything from scratch usually so use up a lot in a year, plus I cook and take food to other family members so it worked out cheaper for me to get these big tubs than the small jars from the supermarket each time.

Some wholesalers. Especially during lockdown. You could ring up local ones and ask. The worst they can say is no.

Wilton Wholefoods I just recommended this on another thread, I have had two orders from them including choc chips for baking, herbs, spices, flour, dried fruits and nuts.

For coconut milk I have switched to a block of creamed or dried powdered as takes less space to store and you can use just the amount you want as rarely need a full cans worth. Recommend biona brand but not aware of any bulk deals though

We got some bulk stuff from local wholesaler in April, some things were cheaper than supermarket but others weren't so worth cross checking prices. Have a lifetime store of lentils and pearl barley now though Grin

I can relate to that @lexloofah.
During the lockdown ended up buying a 25kg bag if buckwheat flour. I couldn’t find anything else but I can’t have gluten so was getting desperate.
The problem is, I’m the only one to use it in the house so it will last for quite while yet Grin

Meuniere it's such a shame that gluten free stuff got snapped up without sparing a thought for people who actually need it, you are good for this lockdown though. I have a small bag of buckwheat that I bought in France a few years ago and use for galettes, not sure how I would use 25kgs!

Food Warehouse (basically Iceland) does loads of large quantity items. I tend to buy massive bags of pasta and rice from them.

WhereYouLeftIt · 02/11/2020 18:15

www.bidfooddirect.co.uk?

They are a wholesaler who normally supply restaurants/cafes, so all their business dried up in the first lockdown and they moved to supplying domestic customers instead.

WhereYouLeftIt · 02/11/2020 18:18

Oh, and Shipton Mill for flour. They have a wide range of gluten free flours if you fancy some variety, and they are the nicest people to deal with, I love them.

We buy our flour from them too @WhereYouLeftIt!

I've used shipton mill and squires www.squires-shop.com/ regularly through the first lockdown and beyond. Excellent.

I tried muscle foods, but the mince in particular was a bit yuck - it looked like it was the 'lights' of a cow chopped up rather than 'beef' minced up. I won't use them again.

I've tried the local wholesalers who normally supply restaurants near us bit hit and miss.

AldiIsla · 02/11/2020 20:57

Muscle foods were caught playing loose with use by dates. I'll be having a look at these other bulk suppliers, thanks for sharing.

If you live near an Asian area. They usually have have Cash and Carry's.
You can a large amount in bulk.
Sacks of onions, rice , wheat, lentils, cooking oils etc

MiddlesexGirl · 03/11/2020 22:43

I literally yesterday finished the 16kg bag of flour I was forced to buy from the first lockdown!
Hoping I won't need another as the only place to store it was on the worktop :/
