I really want to put some stuff together for jan. but my husband doesn’t think it is needed. He is not being an arse or anything. And if I decided to do this again ( did it last time ) he wouldn’t stop me. Just doesn’t see the need.
Does anyone here have a partner who doesn’t do this with them. How does it work in ur house.
I have lots of medical problems which leads to problems with food. So my food I eat is limited. Hence why I am going to get myself a stash. Just wondered how other people did this.

I just didn't tell him. I do the bulk of the grocery shopping so after discussing it with him and having him pour scorn on the idea, I carried on regardless. It was a Brexit stash that became a COVID stash, and I was able to store it all in a place he didn't regularly go. He was very grateful of it during the early weeks of COVID as it meant we could avoid the supermarket and is now fully on board.

DinkBoo · 27/10/2020 16:30

I just ignored any objections, and basked in the I told you so's come lockdown Grin

cariadlet · 27/10/2020 16:54

I had a Covid stash back in Spring that's turned into a Brexit stash. I haven't bothered telling dh and he seems not to have noticed my boxes. He wouldn't object but would think I'm overreacting.

Mine wasn’t really bothered, and tolerated my prepping with a kind of gentle pisstaking. I treated it as my hobby really - and that’s how I justified buying some of the bigger items; which was fine with DP as he’d spend on his own hobby.

I always tried to aim for a decent stock of food but got more organised in the lead up to Brexit attempt #1, and then with COVID it all came in really handy. DP’s not quite a convert to the full prepping lifestyle (shows no interest in me fiddling around with the bug out bags Grin ) but he’s much more on board with keeping levels of food & toiletries stocked up).

I’d just potter around doing your own thing and if he raises it just casually shrug it off as “well if people start to panic buy again I just want to save us the hassle of the supermarkets for a couple of weeks”.

bellinisurge · 03/11/2020 09:17

I just did it. Pre lockdown we shopped at Aldi and B&Ms in store so I got cheap extras over a long period of time. We trialled a few during lockdown. He's totally on board now and even makes suggestions.

BiddyPop · 04/11/2020 11:53

I didn't tell DH initially - I do most of the food shopping. I tend to keep a reasonably well-stocked "pantry" anyway, but I did build up more this year (mostly Covid-related). He was slightly shocked when he saw me sorting the extras I had put in the spare wardrobe a while ago - but has realised it is useful to have these things as we aren't getting out as much to shop and the online deliveries have a lot of substitutions and omissions at times (if the things we want are even on the online inventory - as lots are only available instore).

The funny thing is that quite a few things I had got with a stores mindset were things we hadn't used before but I wanted things like some longlife milk etc - we tried both oat and almond milk, and both have become staples in the fridge alongside the cow juice - DH and I like the oat in our coffee and DD likes the almond in tea and cereal. Even though DH had shot both eyebrows into his forehead (not just the usual 1! Grin) when I first brought out a bottle......

Mine just gets frustrated that he cannot find anything in my over full pantry when he is cooking (I don’t cook EVER, unless it is on an open fire). He used to think I was mad prepping but now gives me advice if he hears of any shortage rumours on the grapevine. He works in the food industry, supplying goods to manufacturers so has an ear to the ground where it matters. Apparently tinned tomatoes could be in short supply as there is a need to social distance at processing plants so less staff producing goods at the moment.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/11/2020 10:56

thanks ezzie. that is interesting to know. I am now wondering where I can hide yet more tomatoes! Grin

DH has built shelves, pandered to my need to control the stocks in the house. But today he didn't select the shortest date horseradish.

indignatio · 07/11/2020 17:10

I am tempted to overlook this on the basis the shelves (not put up with tins and cans in mind) sunk on Friday and we only just managed to save the jars (including said horseradish) before they all impaled themselves on the stone floor.

BlackeyedSusan · 08/11/2020 10:06

Oh no.

EzzieLove · 11/11/2020 19:35

Indignation, this is simple unacceptable. Sack him and find a new one 😂

indignatio · 11/11/2020 19:55

No, this one is the best. I just chose to use shelves for photos for serious prepping

He has already acquired supporting brackets to reattach so when set up again(this week hopefully) it will have the functionality I assumed it had previously

indignatio · 11/11/2020 20:01

But horseradish....

BlackeyedSusan · 12/11/2020 14:41

... is delicious

indignatio · 12/11/2020 18:30

When in date.....

BlackeyedSusan · 12/11/2020 21:59

it sort of loses its potency as it ages, so a new jar can come as quite a shock after finishing the old one off.

glad the shelves are getting reinforced.

indignatio · 14/11/2020 14:53

It might now be obvious as to why 3 1inch screws were inadequate to support the shelves

My first ever shelfie.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/11/2020 16:17

Oh yes. I se what you mean.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/11/2020 17:34

Missed your second photo last time. Looks good.

MarshmallowManiac · 15/11/2020 00:27

Oh no Indignatio definitely grounds for divorce Grin Grin definitely see where you're coming from about the screws.

MarshmallowManiac · 15/11/2020 00:28

Great shelfie Indignatio

caringcarer · 15/11/2020 01:36

I always like to be well stocked. My dh put up a tall set of plastic shelves for me in conservatory. I have to keep tins stacked next to it though as a shelf full of tins makes it sag in middle of shelf. I have 4 cats who are picky eaters so I have bought 8 dozen tins of their favourite cat food. After last lockdown as I just got a dozen extra each week. I have got enough of everything to keep us all going for 2 months, except bread, but can make my own as have yeast and strong flour.
