Grocer magazine: Tesco chairman warns of short-term food shortages after Brexit

A story just caught my eye from the grocer magazine (which is a high quality influential industry magazine focusing on all things grocery). It's dated last Friday.

www.thegrocer.co.uk/brexit/tesco-chairman-warns-of-short-term-food-shortages-after-brexit/649458.article#.X408LpmsuGw.twitter

Tesco’s chairman John Allan has warned of short-term fresh food shortages for up to “a few months” after the Brexit transition period ends in January.

“We can’t rule out the possibility that if there is dislocation at the ports of entry to the UK there will be some shortages of some items of fresh food, at least for a time,” Allan said in an interview with Bloomberg Television on Friday.

Allan insisted there was no need for the public to stockpile, “but there may be some things we have to learn to do without for a few weeks, possibly a few months after Brexit,” he said.

The article goes on to flag that the average imported food item will face tariffs of around 20%. (If anyone is wondering, most of our food stuff in the first quarter is imported).

Nope, Boris is going to see us into no deal and fuck off with his laptop and his pension.

Begonias · 03/11/2020 21:46

Now that's one place I never thought of storing things, car boot and garage. I don't have a garage but have a coal shed instead, might store some onions and potatoes there.
Thank you all for that suggestion.

BlackeyedSusan · 04/11/2020 09:15

Shed is good for things like toiletries and cleaning supplies. Things that don't mind a little damp. Make room in the house for tins etc.

Wondering about the effect of US election on end of transition and what it will mean for us import/ food wise.

MarshmallowManiac · 12/11/2020 10:57

They don't want a deal and totally are going to blame the EU for anything that goes wrong.
I think Biden won't go against Ireland Blackeyed as he has Irish heritage so imo it doesn't bode well for the UK. Also worrying about there being delays as obviously they are going to be distributing the vaccine at around the same time. Sad

MarshmallowManiac · 12/11/2020 11:41

You're welcome Begonias

BlackeyedSusan · 12/11/2020 14:35

Vaccine and Brexit. Oh. bloody. Hell.

Yeah, can't see any potential issues with that! Hmm

MarshmallowManiac · 12/11/2020 14:47

No none at all. What. the. devil. are. we. worrying. about? Hmm

Government track record?

MarshmallowManiac · 12/11/2020 15:58

Haha yes that'll be it Grin Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 12/11/2020 21:57

ploughing on with the stashing things away. God, I hope it is all for nothing and everything is going to be fine. It has always been ok at the last minute several times before.. (which may make people not bother this time when they did before. ) I keep changing my mind... and making myself dizzy.

if it is ok: lots of cheap weeks of shopping.
if it goes pear shaped: enough to keep us going for a while.

ReturntoSpamfritters · 14/11/2020 23:30

Any kind of a deal will see price rises anyway, so we're saving money there at least.
No deal and we'll be glad we stocked up.
Massive (but somehow not unexpected) U-turn which sees us re-joining the EU, we can celebrate by throwing Spam and lentil street parties throughout the land.

MarshmallowManiac · 14/11/2020 23:50

I hope so too Blackeyed, now have an extra cupboard and room since my DD has moved out so I am going to try and fill it. I would love to get another freezer but I think I only have room for a little one, any recommendations please guys.

MarshmallowManiac · 14/11/2020 23:52

I would love that to happen Spam, but sadly don't hold out much any hope. Sad

BlackeyedSusan · 15/11/2020 00:06

Spam and lentil street party. Grin

Oh well, one can dream.

We have just bought a Bosch and a Beko undercounter freezers.

Bosch is quiet but has a short cable. Feels better space than the Beko as it is three drawers, one quite deep. Does have annoying freezer elements between drawers.not frost free but no sign of frost yet. Only undercounter Bosch freezer.

Beko has a drop down door on the top compartment and less deep middle drawer. It is cheaper and frost free. It is at ex's so not as familiar with it.

MarshmallowManiac · 15/11/2020 00:08

Thanks Blackeyed will have to investigate, the one I bought for Brexit was an AO which I am really happy with but also love Bosch and had a Beko one before which was great. Were they expensive?

BlackeyedSusan · 15/11/2020 00:18

Beko wasn't too bad. Bosch a bit more. Had problems with a Hotpoint so I went with Bosch for quality. Ex went with frost free, so only a Beko.

MarshmallowManiac · 15/11/2020 00:20

Yes do like the Bosch also want one that won't take too long to deliver.

KoalaKube · 22/11/2020 08:17

I’ve got a modest store but this report from the Grocer quoting leading industry leads is sombering reading, especially as my little garden plot will be bare until Spring, Frozen veg on the list for next monthly shop. www.thegrocer.co.uk/brexit/food-industry-fears-brexit-worst-case-scenario-is-now-the-reality/650589.article?fbclid=IwAR1kp6CrmtiIs6r4UxWpwG-ryO7cQu7QRZtFWjzhc4Tcw2XAuPHPx9HMVMQ

Update on original article.

bellinisurge · 22/11/2020 08:22

If anyone is peeking at this: swede is high in vitamin c. It's often readily available from UK growers in the winter and can be sneaked into mash in the usual "sneaking veg in" kind of way.

WhiskyForChristmas · 22/11/2020 10:48

Anyone else noticed that the new James May cooking show on prime is basically a combination of "oh, look stuff we'll still be able to get after Brexit, spam included" and "this is a cheap food that a country heavily relied on after war in response to food shortages."

I had to stop watching after two episodes, it was too obvious.

bellinisurge · 22/11/2020 11:37

James May was a vocal Remain voter. As was Clarkson.

WhiskyForChristmas · 22/11/2020 12:36

I know that. I do, however, wonder whether he got drunk one night and thought to himself, "ha, going to propose a Brexit cooking show!" and the publisher just ran with it (it is apparently linked to a cook book).

BlackeyedSusan · 22/11/2020 16:59

I am not sure I want to open that article...I think I would rather carry on with the fingers in ears la la la for a few minutes. I need to brace myself for more bad news?

BlackeyedSusan · 22/11/2020 17:00

(having received emails saying both children are now self isolating)

MarshmallowManiac · 22/11/2020 17:16

Oh no Blackeyed
