UHT Milk

I bought some of this last year before Brexit got kicked down the road again and have just realised that it is well past date.

It says Best Before May 2020 but does anybody know what the risk of using it actually is?

Obviously if it smells bad or tastes rank I wouldn't use it but I am inclined to hang on to it just in case.

It seems wasteful to just chuck it away and buy more which would probably also end up past its BB date if fresh milk continues to be easy to source.

Obviously I can't donate something out of date to a food bank.

I had some that also had may20 bbd on too.
I've since made, custard, rice puddings and some porridge, also hot chocolate. Both dh and I are still alive and well. Although if dh knew it was ood I probably wouldn't be, he's a bit funny about food dates Grin

I've used it several months past its date and it has been fine. Shake well before you use it though, and you may find it's a bit clumpy at the bottom. Let your nose be your guide.

I wouldn't hang on just in case. If you need milk in 2 months and it is off then you have nothing. Open one now to see if it is still ok and if you don't like the taste then cook with it or use for porridge etc. I use UHT to make yoghurt as you don't have to heat it first like fresh milk. Then get a new one each week or 2, so the dates don't all run out at once.

Thanks for the responses. I will open one (I have five) and see what it's like.

What was it like? I have used uht a month out of date but never had any go that far over.

mosscarpet · 28/09/2020 16:11

I had some about a month out of date. I used it to make yogurt and it was fine, and replaced it with more for my stash.

I have been buying UHT milk to have in just incase (illness, weather, Brexit) for a few years now. I always take note of the date and then donate it to the food bank about a month before it runs out and buy myself some new stock.

TeaOneSugar · 09/10/2020 15:09

I keep UHT milk in, I use one when we run short of milk instead of popping to the shops, we don't mind it and it saves a special trip and the inevitable extra bits and bobs you pick up. I wouldn't keep anything in stock we won't use.

Imsayingnothing · 10/10/2020 00:53

Had two that were bb September made porridge, tea, hot choc etc with them the other day and we are all still fine. However may is a bit further out than September so I'm interested to see how it turned out.

Sorry to have taken so long to report back. Have only just tipped the first one down the sink - full of clots.

I will be getting rid of the rest now.

Ah yes it must have been too much over the time limit. Shame. I wonder if it's freezable, if it is then you could always keep some in the freezer, if space allows and then it might last longer next time.

I don't have a lot of freezer space so I keep a couple of plastic containers of fresh milk in the freezer and that's all.

I would rather use what little space I have for more interesting things. I don't actually know if milk is one of those things which will be affected by a no deal Brexit.

I certainly see a lot of cows when driving in the country Grin.
