Christmas will probably be quite different this year.

Is anyone else thinking ahead?

This is a fantastic thread. I'm feeling a bit panicky because what with having DS my eye has been taken off the ball and I need to replenish my stocks as I too think we will be in trouble again come Christmas

I've already got three bottles of mulled wine and a bottle of Baileys
Christmas crackers
Cards and gift wrap
Have ordered mincemeat

I want to find some truckles of cheese with long dates but not having any luck
Have added some pringles and twiglets to our next online shop which I'll stash away

I can't quite remember what other bits and pieces I need to get or usually have so will keep an eye on this thread

ballsdeep · 20/07/2020 21:08

@PurpleCalm

I'm actually looking forward to perhaps a less commercialised Christmas. Everything is so expensive - Santa visits, days out, panto etc. I will miss it but think it will be nice to get back towards enjoying the more simple things too.

I've already started present shopping. Will start to think about foods in September. I've got cards and wrap from last year - bought way too much in the sales!

I'll miss the shops and atmosphere though, I really don't want to queue in the cold weather!

I've started buying presents, although I'm not sure if pantos are going ahead this year?

I love the bath Christmas market but really can't see that going ahead! I don't think I'd go anyway.

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 20/07/2020 21:09

What sort of baking things are people stocking up on?

lexloofah · 20/07/2020 21:21

Cheese truckles: you can order directly from Snowdonia Cheese co, would need to check with them about dates. I am thinking of getting DH one of the gift boxes as part of his present

Dk20 · 20/07/2020 21:29

Have started on the presents for DC, have the main present got for the youngest and a few bits for my 6yo. Got a few bargains from the thread over on the Christmas board.

carly2803 · 20/07/2020 21:47

joining this thread. i have not even given it a thought. I will now! I will start prepping after next payday

I am not too concerned yet. Biggest bonus might be not having to travel the length and breadth of the country to see people this year.

I know that sounds awful, wasn't meant to be, it is just practical. We had around three or four months without seeing our loved ones and coped kind of ok, because everyone knew what the reason was.

In fact I think a quieter Christmas in our own homes with our kids with few or no visitors sounds fantastic. Just for now anyway!

RomaineCalm · 20/07/2020 22:03

@Peterbishopssarcasticsmile I'm thinking of things like dried fruit, mincemeat, ground almonds, baking powder, dried yeast, flour, sugar, butter etc. I'll also buy some blocks of fresh pastry to go in the freezer.

BrieAndChilli · 20/07/2020 22:42

This is the first year that none of the kids believe in Father Christmas so at least if it all goes to hell in a hand basket the kids won’t be too disappointed as will realise Covid has had an impact.
None of them particularly want or need anything so won’t be desperate to get the latest must have toy etc.
Food wise I will
Start stocking up in September on non-perishables and treats etc so we have something Christmassy in.
We always get a real tree from up the forest (where they sell them we don’t just go and cut one down!!) so hopefully will still be able to do that as outdoors and ale to social distance. They will already have grown the trees so won’t be short on stock.

I do too, quite honestly.

Just marking my place to come.back to this later tonight.

Have a few bits.for stockings for dd, but need things.for the DS's and main presents etc. And food.

Basically I need to read through and make a list!

misscockerspaniel · 09/08/2020 10:15

I live in the Channel Islands so post gifts to my relatives in the UK. This year, I am planning to send them by early October. Christmas is already a challenge for the postal service. C-19 plus many, many more people using the post to both buy and send cards/presents is going to be a nightmare for Royal Mail.

MarshmallowManiac · 09/08/2020 12:49

I have just been through some of the Christmas threads and received lots of inspiration for you all and made a stocking list so thank you all. [santa]

Placemarking... I haven't begun thinking about Christmas much yet - have been focused on prepping general supplies and foods but need to get on to it

Bluewavescrashing · 22/08/2020 21:31

Nearly finished my present shopping 🎅 and birthdays until February.

Food stocks are high at home, plus cleaning products and craft supplies.

Next to prep is baking supplies. I have 2kg of flour in my apocalypse box but need to add other basics for baking.

Houseplantmad · 22/08/2020 22:27

@misscockerspaniel why not order and have the gifts delivered direct to save on stress?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/08/2020 22:36

I have the Christmas cake ingredients sorted and my rumtopf is full. I'm considering what next.

Diversion · 22/08/2020 22:50

I usually start prepping for Christmas in September. For various reasons including Covid and the fact I actually hate Christmas I have started a month early this year. Presents for DGC are already bought plus some for other family members and today I bought 6 tubs of chocolates with BB dates of 03/21 from Tesco which are always included in my grown up childrens presents, also various other food bits with good BB dates too. Family are laughing, but they laughed at my general preps and then realised why when lockdown hit. I've been using discount codes on the Christmas threads on MN which have saved me quite a bit. Only 4 paydays till Christmas for those who get paid monthly and I try not to touch my December salary until the date I would normally get paid. Ive grown and frozen enough veggies apart from potatoes for our main course for Christmas dinner and have all the condiments in my stash so just need starters, a turkey and dessert now.

Maryann1975 · 22/08/2020 23:28

Normally I would agree with you, but this year, after spending so much time in the house just Me, Dh and kids, I would love to have everyone round and do a bit of entertaining.

There are 6 families in our group and we haven’t all been together since February. We are trying to meet up in smaller groups, but it’s Not the same, really strange and we are really missing being all together.

If Christmas dinner ends up just the 5 of Us, it will be really odd. I know some families really enjoy locking themselves away, but for us, it has never been like that and I know our parents will really struggle with that (as if they can’t come to us, they shouldn’t be going to any of our siblings either).

I can’t see the situation being any better by Christmas though, so maybe it is better that we start getting used to the idea now? A Christmas with no socialising fills me with sadness though.

BiddyPop · 03/09/2020 11:13

I have been doing some buying, but actually using the time gained from no commute to use up my fabrics stash to craft presents for people - like the fabric I bought to make cushion covers for DBIL's house (only about 10 years ago now!) was finally made into those covers for this Christmas (and the cushion pads arrived yesterday). And various other crafty things.

I have also been building my food stocks back up for winter, as I think we may well have more lockdowns to come. So I want to be able to avoid shops when the panic starts.

DH is already talking about Christmas, extremely early for him (he knows I am a Christmas nut who thinks about it a lot earlier than he does, I just wait for him to start before talking about it) - he is torn between feeling we need to visit DPs/DMIL (250 miles away) and staying here. We tried to get a cottage which we had before, but they doubled the price and it's beyond what we are prepared to pay. So I think he's resigned to staying here (I have offered a couple of other options for ourselves down there). I wouldn't be surprised though if that changes and we end up travelling (at which point I will get grumpy at not having an escape option as both houses are too full on and overcrowded in a normal Christmas, and I have asthma so don't want to put myself in too much crowding as well). But he also wants to put up lights much earlier than usual, and possibly decorations too - so I need to plan for a big electric bill (but worth it for mental wellbeing purposes) and getting the decorations from the storage unit.

We also don't go mad on food - we do a turkey but have made freezer space to freeze some leftovers etc. But there are some things we buy that need to be relatively last minute - like Leonidas chocs rather than Roses. And nice cheese. So I am starting to think a bit about those.

And I am not working in the city centre at the moment, like I normally am. Even if we go back to the office, I will have less chance to shop as I've been moved to a building further from shopping streets - so I need to plan carefully.

But I have found plenty of good local suppliers, so will continue to support those, just need to remember to order early. So lovely bread, good ground coffee, butcher, fishmonger, deli, fruit and veg etc are all possible without going into a large supermarket. Some are online order to collect in person, others are online with delivery, and some are queue outside in person.

Actually, I need to bring the jigsaws back from storage for the holidays (we actually were too busy, with WFH and school continuing, and then DD did have some activities get going again to keep her busy all summer, to do them earlier). And I think 1 new board game would be a good idea. We have played our current ones a lot.

I also want to get to the firewood supplier early this year - I think we will spend a lot more time at home this winter and use the stove a lot more, but so will others. So I need to get my normal supplies early, and be organised about a Christmas restock in early December (I have somewhat limited storage capacity - but can throw some extra into the shed if necessary).

But I think we definitely won't be going to events or experiences this year - other than planning a Christmas Hike with my Cub pack, I might plan another one for the family, bringing flasks of hot chocolate, when we would normally be battling crowds in shopping centers.

FoolShapeHeart · 03/09/2020 13:40

Kid's Christmas & winter birthday gifts just about done, adults underway but could manage from gift stash if needed.
Dc's main gift, advent, stocking & family Christmas Eve box mainly ready.
Pud, cake, mincemeat & pastry, mulling spices & few more of our traditional Christmas treats stashed.
Cards & wrap from last year, new & existing Christmas activities, books, games, DVDs.
Planned various local & home festive activities in case organised events unavailable.
Checked & stocked up on cosy blankets, hot water bottles, ice melt stuff, waterproofs, marshmallows & hot chocolate etc.
I'm not finished, but we could still have a lovely festive time without any significant compromises even if I had to stop now, which is a weight off my mind.

RubySlippers77 · 04/09/2020 23:04

Some great ideas on here! My DC are finally back at school now, gives me chance to get in the loft and sort out all our Christmas stock from last year plus the presents I've put away in the meantime. I do want to stock up on more 'cosy' things for home plus a bit of food, I should have the time to do that soon after six loooooong months of DC at home Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 05/09/2020 00:31

I have started prepping for Christmas 2021. the cranberry sauce arrived today witha very long use by date. Grin

MarshmallowManiac · 05/09/2020 12:39

You're so organised Blackeyed I bow to you would like to get into that mindset re Christmas/Brexit/Covid prepping, what do you recommend that I should stock? Smile TIA
