I bought 20 kgs of flour and I use between 2 & 3 kgs a week

I have split it into 3 - should I freeze each tub of flour?

I wish people would stop buying up flour so crazily. If we all just stuck to our normal habits there would be plenty for everyone. As it is, I've been trying to buy flour for a couple of weeks now with no luck.
Our supermarket ran out of floyr for several days but now we can only get large bags as the suppliers do not have enough small bags to keep up. We sell sacks or decant it into our own small bags. Other shops are doing the same. Its not anyones fault their isnt flour.

My local asda and Morrisons in store bakeries are splitting 16kg bags of flour & selling them in one kilo freezer bags. I bought 2, one went straight in the freezer and I'm using the other one.

Just out of interest, why would a freezer kill weevils and not an oven at 200 degrees in a cake or bread tin?

Stuckforthefourthtime · 27/05/2020 15:35

I never used to freeze flour until I got a really stubborn infestation of moths thanks to a bad batch.

@DivaLasVegas the issue is that there might be eggs in there which then hatch in your cupboard, with resulting pantry infestations - even worse if you are a prepper with a large stash of dry goods built up over time.

The link I posted the other day showed two methods of killing weevils, oven & freezer. I prefer the hot oven method myself but SE prefer the freezing method.

KittenVsBox · 27/05/2020 16:51

Both methods work, @DivaLasVegas.
Bit it's much simpler imo, to dump a cab oc flour on the freezer than unpack it cook it, cool it, and repack it!
And the cleaning involved when the bastards take over the flour (and pasta) is a pig.

InfiniteSheldon · 27/05/2020 16:56

Why can't you get hold of it? Every bakery on every high St is taking orders for it and stocking it as are loads of local Cafes

KatyMac · 27/05/2020 18:14

I'm shielding so I rely on a supermarket order and flour isn't on line

You can buy 16kg bags of flour online and split it with someone if you don't want that much.

Barbararara · 28/05/2020 13:49

I don’t have space in my freezer for flour, even for a short while so I’ve just split my flour into tubs and bags. As long as it’s sealed, it can’t infest the rest of the cupboard.
But that said, I haven’t changed supplier and never had weevil issues with this brand. In your circumstances, op, I’d probably freeze in small batches then store. but given how fast you’re likely to use it I wouldn’t worry too much.

KatyMac · 01/06/2020 19:45

Well it's all been frozen and put away carefully

Thanks everyone
