What do you store your products in?

My DH is currently in the process of building a seven foot tall unit in our garage. As such, the food stored in it will need to be in some sort of storage that can't be accessed by damp, mice etc.

I'm envisaging prepping for cleaning/toiletry products, medical supplies, tinned and dried food. Does anyone have any recommendations for what I could store the latter in? I'm imagining bags of rice/pasta aren't going to be the most secure way to store things?

I have some large Mylar bags to keep nibblers at bay should they make an unexpected appearance

I keep mine in tote bags in the spare bedroom wardrobe.

For longer term and less secure in the garage, I would suggest decanting into sealed containers, like kilner jars or secure plastic tubs (like the Lock-it lids ones).

And keep those little sachets of silica gel from shoe boxes etc, as they will help reduce damp. OR maybe put a dehumidifier box out there - not necessarily an appliance requiring electricity, but the box with the tablet in it often used for bedrooms or caravans etc, and just empty out the water every couple of weeks (and replace tablets as necessary). Sorry, I can't think of the name of them, but I know we get them in hardware shops here.

If you use Kilmer type jars get ones with good seals. If you need them to do more than look pretty, you need to pay a bit more imo.

A few dried peas in sugar, salt, and other goods prone to damp, will help too.

I save the mylar bags that my online shopping comes in & store spare bags of rice, flour and sugar in there.

I store excess tins in plastic storage crates at the bottom of my pantry cupboard.

Spare treats, toiletries etc are kept hidden in suitcases. Nobody looks in there especially since all our holidays for this year are cancelled.

I keep my stores in the cupboard under the stairs - tins are stacked in apple boxes from the supermarket and dry goods are in 40l plastic storage boxes with lids. Learnt the hard way last autumn when the mice got into the pasta, rice etc. So far they haven't managed to get into the plastic boxes.

I used to put our food in large plastic storage boxes with lids. (After mice got into our food cupboard in the garage).

Food is under the stairs, loo and kitchen rolls are in the loft and under the bed, laundry supplies are in the garage.

PontiacBandit · 30/04/2020 22:49

Medical and toiletries are also under the ottoman bed.

Yes to the biggest plastic storage with lids. The lids make them stackable too. No mice then!!

FusionChefGeoff · 02/05/2020 22:08

Those under bed plastic boxes are brilliant and I find great proportions. Anything deeper and it's hard to keep things from getting squashed / lost but these are about right. And can be stacked but easily slid off / across to reach what's underneath.

I don’t have loft/garage/understairs at the moment but our kitchen does have high ceilings, so I have a load of decorative looking storage boxes (a plastic rattan-type) that fit in with the colour scheme of the kitchen and they are all stacked on top of the cupboards and fridge.

We’re house hunting at the moment and hopefully will have an outhouse for storage then (they’re always listed as garages but are too small/inaccessible to actually use as a garage, so I don’t want to call it a garage!). I generally use Really Useful boxes for organising/storage that isn’t on show and think shelving with RU boxes will do nicely.

I would leave anything in tins or household and dry (bleach, disinfectant etc.) in the garage in sealed plastic tubs and any food stuff that could be compromised by damp and wet in the house in a dark, cool place. I would keep any masks and sanitiser inside too.
