Anyone worried about radiation levels??

Just that really.
Recent wild fires in Ukraine have caused a spike in detected radiation levels.
Does this worry anyone and are you prepping for it in any way?

“Spiking” is the media hyping it up. It’s “spiked” from “very very very low” to “still very very low”. If you don’t worry about radiation exposure from flying, x rays etc; then you have even less to worry about in the UK from the Chernobyl fires.

So I take you are not worried about it or prepping for it then.

I’m not worried about it at the moment - I think obviously it’s important to be aware of things and monitor changes to the situation. In general, I’m prepared to stay indoors on the off chance there’s any sort of warning for a specific event; but I think short of investing in some serious radiation protection you can’t prep too much for major radiation.

Its 15% higher than usual the trees were helping filter the atmosphere and there is a radioactive pile buried in that area I'm wondering just how safe that is

I agree it is a worry but I am not currently doing anything more than I already do.
It's easy to feel overwhelmed with all these unknowns atm and wondered if radiation was a concern. It was a big worry a while back.

This article shows radiation levels literally right by the fire at 0.34uSv/hr:

www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/apr/06/bad-news-radiation-spikes-16-times-above-normal-after-forest-fire-near-chernobyl

Yes, this is “16 times the normal baseline”; but it’s important to put into perspective - a dental x ray exposes you to 10uSv.

If I lived in that part of Ukraine I might be concerned.

I guess those living in Kyiv and the neighbourhood should be concerned. Basically there were many reports about thick smog in Kyiv but nothing serious, at least it wasn't reported. But if the radiation levels were to rise, the EU will notice and mass media wouldn't stay still as well. But if you are that worried, you can always get a radiation detection device (here's the one that is quite popular among tour guides in Chornobyl - ecotestgroup.com/products/categories/isotope-identification, at least this is what our tour guide a year ago recommended)
