Im looking for advice on how to make my food last as long as possible , ive got a shop delivery. Monday and brought a lot of cupboard ingredients and have done a 'stock check' of my freezer and cupboard currently. So any tips on making things last , hoping to last 3 weeks before needing to go shop/set up fruit and veg delivery, have milk and bread being delivered weely from local milkman

Eat what is out of date first, then smaller portions of meat and bulk with cupboard stuff eg rice and pasta.
Depending on fresh veg can any be frozen, or made into soup so still getting five a day?

Make a list of what goes off when, and work through in order, more or less. It sounds too obvious, but writing it down really helps.

With fruit, for instance, we eat the soft first, the harder ones after a few days and smoothies with frozen fruit after that.

It can get a bit samey, but it stretches out the interval between shops.

Use fresh before frozen and dried/canned last as a general rule.

Store veg and some fruits in fridge - as dry as possible, between sheets if kitchen roll.

Cook only a reasonable portion, or if you’ve cooked extra, take the extra out of the pot before you serve up. It’s very easy to scoff it as seconds if you wait until after. I’m not suggesting starving yourself though!

Use up left overs as soup, omelette, in a stir fry or as bubble and squeak.

Freeze a load of bread and have fresh sandwiches for the first half of the week and toasted sandwiches after that. Use up stale bread in sweet or savoury bread puddings.

If you have Twitter take a look at Jack Monroe's thread. Actually, I think she's doing something on TV tomorrow (Sunday 5). Great tips about making the most of stuff.

I would suggest few things - Use a meal planner. Batch cook and freeze.Batch cooking is a great way to use up any food before it goes off and you can avoid cooking for the rest of the week!. Use the left over vegetables to make pickles to preserve them. If you have a dehydrator, use them. If you don’t, find other ways to preserve fruits like making jams, conserves and jellies. Bake rich fruit cakes (those last a year atleast). Dry the herbs.

OP - pls could you change title of this thread to 'making my food last' - I think this could be a really helpful read for lots of people

Kitchen roll tip was new for me (do for spinach, but not other things) - so thanks Barbararara!

Anything on the turn gets frozen and made into smoothies here. Including strawberry stalks and so on.

Ladybookreader · 05/04/2020 02:57

Any fruit gets turned into crumble, strewdle, veg into curry, soup or chilli, batch cook one day a week so you have few dinners for when you don't want to cook, wraps can be used cheaply as pizza bases, add hand ful of raisins into porriage/cereal to make last longer and healthier

if you eat less, it will last longer..
