How to stay organised

I accidentally prepped for this - was ready for Brexit in October, topped up for Xmas, was very relieved no panic buying was necessary, but it’s given me a serious fright when I see what supermarkets are like now, and it’s made me determined never to be unprepped again. At the minute, everything I have was bought around the same time, so use by dates etc are similar, plus I’m actually using it. But if I were to stay prepped, is there a simple way of organising and managing stuff do you don’t have waste. I don’t have much storage, so yin’s etc need to go in garage, plus I have a freezer out there. Sorry if this is a stupid question that has probably been asked many times.

My method is:
Sharpie to write bbd in large writing that I can see at a glance. Even if you buy everything at the same time the bbds can vary surprisingly.

A4 Notebook: on right hand page I have current month and next month. One day per line at the top, and 2-3 days per line by the bottom.
On left hand page I have a couple of lines for each month and after dec, a couple of lines per year.

Then I jot down everything. (In normal life I wouldn’t bother with this- I’d just stack like with like in date order and work in order. But in case of food shortages, I’m being careful not to let anything go uneaten.)

Once I get through the month, or to the point where I’m running out of space on right hand page, I just tear it out and jot down next two months, but my future months/years list remains.

It takes a ridiculous amount of words to explain something straightforward! There’s probably an app but pen and paper suits my brain better.

I also keep lists on my freezer door of what’s in there, changing the quantities as I use them.

And after that I meal plan (badly), at the moment roughly following the principal of fresh first, then frozen (as its vulnerable to power outage) and tinned last.

On the point of freezers and power, I keep a bottle cap of water with a penny on top inside. If power goes out, you don’t want to open the door but it’s hard to tell when it’s all refrozen if it’s safe to eat. But if you check the penny and find it’s sunk down through the water you know the freezer was too warm.

Oh, thanks barbara, that’s so helpful. :)

And the penny idea is bloody genius!
