Late to prepping but have a bread maker arriving today. I have flour but no yeast. I have a shop coming today but yeast not arriving. Any ideas for online delivery?

I’ve struggled to find yeast as well. I’ve started a sourdough starter instead.

If you can get out they can give you fresh yeast at the bakery counter but I don’t know if the bakery counters will be open.

Amazon? That's where I got mine.
Also, sourdough starter using wild yeast- stuff in the air, works really well.

stella1know · 26/03/2020 07:44

I was wondering this too, yeast will surely sell out next. Can you use just sourdough and then not need any yeast? I have a sourdough starter pack and wanted to make a starter but the daily “feeding” of the mix is daunting.

stella1know · 26/03/2020 07:44

Or do you need sourdough AND yeast both?

JulesJules · 26/03/2020 07:47

We always make our own bread (breadmaker). There has been no dried yeast anywhere, even Amazon quoting long delays. Am going to start making soda bread instead.

BikeRunSki · 26/03/2020 07:48

I have not been able to get any dried yeast or flour, for a couple of weeks, Tesco, Tesco online, Amazon or Doves Farm website.

No you can just use sourdough starter - get it going now, it'll take a few days to get going.

My tip is keep usinig the same type of flour - or take a few days to convert it when you want to change. My wholemeal starter for some reason doesn't work straight off with white flour, so I have to spend a few days feeding it with white flour if I want to make white bread. I do it in a separate pot obviously, so I only have one starter to keep alive day to day - or rather week to week as I keep it in the fridge when I'm not using it

BikeRunSki · 26/03/2020 08:06

How do I make a sourdough starter?

Their recipe is also good - it looks daunting, but actually they just make sure they mention every single step, which is good (especially since I tend to free-wheel).

I just use pudding basins sprayed with oil rather than a proper basket lined with fabric (I have done the fabric, but I don't have space in my tiny kitchen to store extra stuff just for making bread), and I like to do that final rise in the fridge overnight so I have bread in the morning .

What else... it's very sticky.. don't freak out about that, and just use plenty of flour. I don't see why, if you prefer, you couldn't do it with a stiffer dough and knead the normal way if you prefer.

picklemewalnuts · 26/03/2020 08:29

I don't think sourdough works in a bread machine. It's a very different speed of process.

Getting the starter alive is the easy bit...

ihatethecold · 26/03/2020 08:38

Bootstrap cook has bread recipes using beer as the yeast starter.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 26/03/2020 08:42

You couldn't do it direct in the bread machine, but you could use it to do all the bits, with waits in between - like have it do all the kneading/cooking with just longer gaps in between because the sourdough takes a bit longer to rise etc.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/03/2020 08:42

I managed to get a delivery slot for elderly relatives which is arriving today (booked a couple of weeks ago though) and according to the email I've just received they've got both the bread flour and the yeast I ordered. That was with asda.

picklemewalnuts · 26/03/2020 08:52

Do you do that, treestumps? I may get another bread machine then. I make bread fairly often, and have tried sourdough with no success. I'm too haphazard, don't start at the right time etc.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 26/03/2020 09:03

No, I do it manually, although my oven sucks in my current house so I've been running experiments in an air fryer (great for cakes, but I need a lot more experimenting for bread as it tends to cook a bit quick) and a tefal multicooker (has a round bowl which supports the loaf quite well, but doesn't brown it).

I have in the distant past used a bread machine though, and I think it depends what you want - I don't really want sandwich bread, so all it would bring to the party is kneading, and I'd lose my lovely round cob with satisfying crust, plus with sourdough classically you don't knead so it's not that useful.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 26/03/2020 09:05

Ha, me too. This is why I follow that kitchn recipe, because the moment I get creative, or think I understand it, it all goes to pot and I get a hard, inedible lump. Following that recipe (Well, more the instructions, there's not much to a sourdough recipe) I get edible bread each time.

picklemewalnuts · 26/03/2020 09:23

Right. A fresh start. Thank you Treestumps!

WhereYouLeftIt · 28/03/2020 22:03

I recently bought yeast from www.shipton-mill.com/flour-direct-shop/yeast-and-extras. But that was before all this.

BikeRunSki · 28/03/2020 23:32

@WhereYouLeftIt - all their yeast is temporarily unavailable

Pencilplantironingboard · 28/03/2020 23:45

Lidl often have dried yeast. But you can make flatbread with any flour. Or flour mixed with natural yogurt makes a great flatbread.

CousinKrispy · 30/03/2020 23:21

Do you have any sort of "ethnic" or international market or corner shop you can get to? That's where I found yeast recently.
