Stocking up on things the Dc can do at home

Ricekrispie22 · 11/03/2020 06:05

It suddenly occurred to me that, should the schools close, my DC would get thoroughly bored at home, so today I’m going to get a few baking kits, colouring books, board games, science kits, search and find books from the library etc... anyone else? Any other ideas?

I'm going to insist they make up every Lego set they own. We might need more than two weeks....

JaneBond0007 · 11/03/2020 06:22

We already have a ton of books, board games etc. As well as carious games consoles.
Other stuff we have is science kits, musical instruments, craft stuff (could do with stocking up on some bits) baking stuff, Lego, puzzles like rubix cubes,

We have a trampoline so the kids can jump to burn off some energy. If you have space and finds it might be worth getting something like that?

I’m eyeing up a table top curling game on amazon,

Ricekrispie22 · 11/03/2020 06:28

Table top curling sounds good. DS has been asking for a basketball hoop and ball for a while and his birthday is in 4 weeks, so might get it now as an early present.

I've been thinking about this. I have a toddler so I'm planning a bit of a routine to replicate nursery (that's if we're isolating but not Ill)

I've got craft packs, dvds and a few stored toys. I plan do do story trays based around his favourite books too.

JaneBond0007 · 11/03/2020 06:39

For those with smaller kids you could ‘theme’ each day so one day could be farm day where you watch farm programmmes, play with any farm toys, read farm books, print and colour in farm pictures, make a sheep from cotton wool etc etc
Helps to focus your time and makes each day a bit different
Other themes could be space, transport, fairies, careers, etc

I'm going to go to the garden centre and get a load of plugs so we can do some planting together. It won't last long but at least it's outside. It's going to be really hard keeping them off screens given the weather. We usually just get out, sports etc.

Us too, especially as we're in a flat and no garden. We have a chore/homework chart anyway which has to be filled before screen time so I think I would modify that.

FuckThisWind · 11/03/2020 06:57

I've stocked up with craft things. I already have a bit of rolling stock that includes Easter stuff, so we will make Easte or cards etc. I've dug all the board games out and made a 'board game corner' similarly, science kits that are yet unused.

Thinking of picking a subject that's new to us that we can all delve into. Something to take our minds off the big stuff. Family tree, Learning more our native language (Welsh) etc.

I've made a note of the current projects they are involved with at school. Romans for example. We can research more on that. My next job is to download some new educational Apps so I will come back to you on that.

Have got some simple recipes to try. Both for baking and making meals.

Oh and I have seeds and compost so some planting with be going on too.

Ricekrispie22 · 11/03/2020 06:59

Great ideas. Keep em coming

Disney plus is available in a couple weeks. That and the garden is my plan.

fartyface · 11/03/2020 07:06

I d got tonnes of books stockpiled and I am going to get some magazines. They have a lot of colouring books etc.

I am considering upping their French learning. Anyone know of any online packages aimed at primary schoolchildren?

Twinklelittlestar1 · 11/03/2020 07:08

@JaneBond0007 love that idea, I'm sold !

Twinklelittlestar1 · 11/03/2020 07:08

Does anyone know any good websites with printable paper crafts?

fartyface · 11/03/2020 07:09

I'm loosely planning days that do some family exercise - yoga etc, some kind of learning (Inc bible study), lots of free play, and then a film in the afternoon.

I am also saving up jobs like sorting out winter clothes and cleaning out the shed for added excitement!

I've bit the bullet and just bought the DC one of the Hobbycraft 'colour your own' shops. It's basically the size of a large cardboard box (but folds flat) and has a little counter and room for them both to sit inside. One of DD's friend had the house one and when I saw it I was surprised at how solid it was. What with colouring it and then setting it up and making us buy things from it, the kids will get a lot from it. Still feel faintly ridiculous playing £15 for it but I've stored it away, if we don't need it early it'll be a birthday gift.

We've got some baking sets and things too.

BrowncoatWaffles · 11/03/2020 07:16

Also, I haven't physically bought it yet because when the time comes it's a digital download, but if we end up locked down we'll be buying Just Dance - kids mode allows six people to play at once, the kids will love it and it'll get us all moving if the weather's bad. It even comes with a month's worth of access to the 400 song library - that'll surely last us if we're well and the DC are going stir crazy!

Mine are 10, 14 & 16. I expect the schools will set some work, we also have a lot of CPG books for their various ages and subjects. My priority will be keeping the GCSE student on task, then the 10yo who has ASC and needs a lot of learning support.

I need to check everyone’s game consoles and renew access to playing on line where necessary as it’s a good way to keep up with friends.

I shall teach a bit more cooking and housekeeping.

We have a trampoline and a reasonable size garden that backs onto the country park, so getting out for fresh air should be okay, too.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 11/03/2020 07:29

As a Cub leader, I'm starting to sketch out a an of optional homework to send out based around various badges that can be done at home.

Skyejuly · 11/03/2020 07:33

I have some workbooks, storybook, flash card and a couple of board games stashed. I also have a box of unopened puzzles and some random stuff in a box ready for xmas. Some pens and papers etc.

Got flour to make playdough

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 11/03/2020 07:49

Back garden and spring clean/declutter the house.

I have a huge sized hippo bag ready to fill, was planning to use the Easter holidays but any sustained period of time will work.

Paint is in the shed so we can refresh walls and woodwork too.

DD is 5 and like housework (weird!!) so between that, TV and toys she'd be fine.

I'd be bored shitless and desperate for an hour of quiet, coffee and cake at a cafe somewhere but she'd be fine.

AllPointsNorth · 11/03/2020 07:50

Cooking.

PurpleCalm · 11/03/2020 12:44

My ideas are;

Baking
Lego
Crafts - I've stocked up on easter themed bits
Print off lots of activity sheets
We have memberships for online games eg timestable rockstars and a few others (from school)
BBC bitesize website
Many maths/english workbooks - can also be printed
Cosmic yoga on youtube - also used in school for PE
Play equipment in the garden
Board games
I've bought a slime kit
We have 2x science kits - need to check what additional items are needed

My secondary school age child has homework set on an app - I would imagine school may make use of that and set tasks/projects?

Sprayitall · 11/03/2020 15:48

If you can buy board games like snake and ladder, carrom board etc it will be fun and very new thing for them to try .. also experiments from dad lab

JaneBond0007 · 11/03/2020 15:51

We have the board game Pandemic that the kids love - not sure it’s appropriate though while on a lockdown!

Readyme · 11/03/2020 16:38
  1. Rainbow rice (this might be a bit controversial due to people worried about food but it's cheaper than most lots etc) uncooked white rice in a sandwich bag add a squirt of poster paint then spread it out on baking parchment paper. Add to a tray with bowls and spoons.
  2. Kinetic sand is great for indoors
  3. Homemade play dough make.it together then play.
  4. Bird feeder + binoculars with keep them busy too especially as they have to learn to be quite or they will scare them away.
  5. Chalk drawings
  6. Learn a new language together there is loads of apps
  7. Simple traditional toys hula hoop, pack of cards, bag of marbles.
