So we have a big storm due to cross the country in the next 24 -36 hrs. By the looks of the weather forcast it will cover most of the country. The safety people are taking the forcast seriously, I was booked to provide med cover for a 24 hr mountain bike event tonight but it was cancelled yesterday.

Most of my garden stuff is away for the winter already, but im double checking for lost toys etc this morning. Half emptied the water butts already this morning, just as an extra prevent flooding around the house precautions. And once i have finished my coffee im going to double check the batteries in the kids torches in case we loss power.

How is everyone preppered ? Minor tweaks, last minute shopping spree ?

I need to put the bins out... That is go and put some rubbish in my bin so it is weighted down, tuck it at the back of the bin shed and put the recycling in front.

Shopping was done for Monday on Friday instead of Sunday.

I am thinking of sending apologies to church attendance tomorrow, don't trust the slates on the roof, the trees alongside he route an needed parking under.

Also, last really windy day, stuff blew off a roof, onto a Car on the road I was parked on. A big block of something blew off a tower block building site onto the road and nearly hit a van driving.

BlackeyedSusan · 08/02/2020 10:17

Fucking phone.

SharpieInThe · 08/02/2020 15:53

Everything here is weighed down, we have uht milk in the cupboard, always bread in the freezer. Torches are wind up and are next to the candles and matches, the blankets are in the poof and I've made a massive pot of chilli which is nice cold - so if we lose power we can see, are warm and fed.

Best case scenario - it's all fine and there's chilli with nachos for dinner tomorrow. 😂

Done all my battening. Dd on a sleepover. Log fire burning. Prosecco flowing. Action movie ready to go. Lasagna ready for the oven. Let's hope it's only a lovely cosy time and not a problem. Fingers crossed.

SharpieInThe · 09/02/2020 04:11

Log fire sounds lovely. Boring old central heating here, although the hot chocolate with marshmallows were lovely when we're all cosy.

Calm here, although DH tells me we'll catch it again in the morning.

Got gust here (Northeast coast) about 18:00hrs, then rain hitting the window woke me about 0500hrs.

Just been out with dog and, while its still raining the wind has dropped. Not much damage either, no slates of or branches down in the local wood.

Apparently a tree down locally but I'm still snuggled in with cuppa. Hope everyone is ok.

SharpieInThe · 09/02/2020 09:55

I am bloody bored!
Kids are either still asleep or playing quietly. We'd usually be out on a Sunday.

Bins and for sale signs away up the street but nothing major here either. In my mind bunkering down for a bit was a busy thing, but I'm just sat like a lemon. Better than the alternative though.

K9medic · 10/02/2020 06:38

Still a bad forcast for the next couple of days and i have to drive down to Derby today for work.

Watching the breakfast news it certainly looks like i got off easy here on the Northeast coast.

Thiugh now we are forcast for snow, and im close enough to the high ground that im likely to get a covering in the next couple of days.

Hows everyone else doing, still here ?

Morning K9.

Safe driving for Derby. We have family NE England and they said yesterday afternoon was quite rough. Hope it's better for you today.

We're still getting some high winds, on weather warnings for snow and floods. Half term here so everyone's in bed. Going to be another lazy day here. I'm deciding whether to be productive with a big clean and meal plan for March, or sit in my pyjamas all day and Netflix.

K9medic · 10/02/2020 11:46

Must be pretty bad in the Midlands today, my course is just an add on to a five day course. Client phoned me while on route and said turn back none of the students arrived this morning.

A friend of mine in Glasgow has a light covering of snow this morning.

Breezy but dry and sunny here on the Northeast coast.

A tree came down onto the road just opposite the office today - one of the most interesting days we’ve had in ages; wasted a good hour updating each other on clearance progress Grin

Managed to dodge the worst of the rain walking in but got absolutely soaked on the way home - going to dig out my waterproof trousers for tomorrow.

sideorderofchips · 10/02/2020 19:54

It's pretty hectic here in jersey. Weather is bad. Boats not coming in

SharpieInThe · 11/02/2020 08:30

Yesterday had the full works. Wind, snow, and then power went out for half the town.
A lot of people caught on the hop.

Still windy but no choice but to go out as I'm working. Bah.

K9medic · 16/02/2020 10:27

Batten Down the Hatches round two!

Well Denis hit us from about lunch time yesterday here on the Northeast coast.

I took the dog (and the 3 kids) for a long walk yesterday morning, first day of the half term holiday and they are already “Bored”. Weather was overcast but pleasant, but by the time we got back wind was very gusty with rain in the air and surprisingly mild.

Did a quick check of a gutter I had noticed was blocked, found tennis ball in down pipe that nobody could remember playing with. As well as a quick check that everything was away and or secured down. Good job that I did as wind was really blowing some from mid afternoon till the early hours of this morning.

“She that should be obeyed” took my car to work yesterday and on the way home last night (in the middle of a downpour) the wipers stopped working. Luckily I like to keep my windows treated with Rain Ex, so she was able to get pulled in at a safe spot. When I got there the wiper spindle had popped of the drive bar, simple fix with a couple of cable ties got her home. Of course it was me who got wet carrying out simple fix (she did say once we were home that she thought it was the spindle coming off).

We also had a short electric cut during the night, at lest the electric bed side clock was flashing. Penny was still on top of the ice in the freezer so no probs there. And all the kids have torches beside their beds so no dramas.

Off now to build a den with the kids in the wood, as they are still “Bored”.

How did everyone else fair ?

Kids were away with ex so lots of convenience food, batch cooked meals and rest. I did get a bit of cleaning and washing done, but drying is unsurprisingly taking a while.

K9medic · 17/02/2020 07:23

Well still no let up in the wind here (but clear skys and dry so thats something) .

No real damage done, one slate off my roof and one of the wheely bins has crossed the yard. Short walk with the dog just as it got light didnt show any branches down on rhe road into the village. No flooding as we are higher up here and not close to the river (one of the reasons i bought the house originally).

Sipping a rather good coffee and planning my day, how did everyone else get on, all ok ?

Dennis is a pain in the arse. I can repair a window mechanism in a storm though, so that's nice.

I'm also getting jumpy about CV. DS is very ill with d&v and we're obviously trying to stop it spreading.

We've got all the essentials but two weeks stuck in if you get CV symptoms, it's a long time isn't it? Tempted to blow some money on junk food and drink.

K9medic · 17/02/2020 09:44

D&V can be a right pain to deal with.

Good hygiene kept us working when the noro virus hit the hospitals round here 2 years ago. I started using hipiscrub and swear by it now.

I also find diorelite helps my kids bounce back from D&V, along with bland food like rice and oats.

Im keeping an eye on CV, and while its a concern, im not panicing about it (yet).
