Stock piling "healthy" food

DH and I were talking about stockpiling - we must start.

We try to eat quite clean/Paleo-ish - very little bread , noodles or pasta. Our carbs would be oats and rice (easy to stockpile) and potatoes (not so easy).
We eat fresh veggies (can stock pile frozen veg and hope freezer stays on) .
We eat eggs (how to stockpile - buy chickens?!) , high welfare meat (can freeze).

In our day to day life we don't eat packet soups or noodles or tinned meat etc.

I am aware that I am probably coming across as a total arse but how do we build up a stockpile of food that won't go to waste when we tend to ear fresh anyway? Or do we just get food we'd usually eat that will last and get bored sitting inside waiting for the emergency to pass while we eat another bowl of porridge?!

Thanks for any advice.

Eggs can be frozen apparently.

Dried beans, dried lentils?
Dried fruit?
Seeds? ( Pumpkin, sunflower)

Seeds for growing, so stockpile pots, compost, tomato food, paintbrushes to pollinate etc.

I love tinned fish you can get some in olivr oil. Pickles, nuts, dried fruits, dark chocolate, sun dried tomatoes, tinned chopped toms, passata, tomato paste, onion garlic powder, salt, pepper, stock or bouillon, jerky, nut butters, agave, coffee, teabags, fruit leather, olives

The next issue now is resisting eating the delicious stash Grin

resisting stash is not happening here.

I make lots of pickles. Some nutrients may be lost and there’s always the salt content to consider but I think it’s a reasonable way of having stock handy to get you through.

Finfintytint · 31/01/2020 17:36

I’m also eyeing up a food dehydrator at the moment. It keeps calling my name...

Worried2020 · 31/01/2020 17:39

Tinned potatoes, tinned fish, tinned fruit and veg as well as frozen. I make baked potatoes in the oven and then freeze them, they take 6 minutes in the microwave to heat back up.

Worried2020 · 31/01/2020 17:40

Fermented veg is also really easy to make and has lots of health benefits...

Off to do a little prepping tomorrow. Is there really any necessity for bottled water in this situation? I don't have a huge amount of storage space.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 31/01/2020 17:50

Potatoes with mud still on can be stored in a cool, dry, dark space in paper sacks for months.

Alternatively you can freeze mash, boiled or bakes potatoes

Eggs can be frozen, you just need to crack and either lightly beat them or seperate yolks from whites, then they can be frozen for up to a year.

Finfintytint · 31/01/2020 17:51

You only need bottled water if you think your plumbed water supply will fail. Not likely unless extreme drought. Not likely anytime soon in Mid Wales Smile

nellodee · 31/01/2020 17:52

Thanks, Finfintytint.

Our water has been turned off on very short notice 4 times since November. Amazing how much you actually use in a day. I keep 4 5ltr bottles now.

Not necessarily true - just look at the twitter feeds of the big water companies to find people bitching about no water on a daily basis. Leaks, repairs, pump failures all can and do regularly happen.

BlackeyedSusan · 01/02/2020 00:37

Who mentioned dehydrators?

Bat signal for @bellinisurge

Worth looking up what she and others have stored. Quite impressive.

Stabbitha1 · 01/02/2020 00:40

What about water sterilising tablets and kindling? I think american low carb/keto lists would be good.

bellinisurge · 01/02/2020 15:09

Thank you @BlackeyedSusan .
