A Merry Brexit Christmas

Sorry if it's been done to death but has anyone done any Christmas specific prepping given the closeness of the date?

I'm guessing the supermarkets will stockpile some things but what about presents? I'm wondering about trying to do most of my present buying before the end of October.

I thought Christmas had been cancelled as part of the agreement for leaving 😁

AnnaMariaDreams · 01/09/2019 07:46

I’m starting my Christmas shopping now, to have it all done by October. No way is bloody Boris ruining Christmas!

AnnaMariaDreams · 01/09/2019 07:47

This might get more traffic in Brexit not preppers

Allthepinkunicorns · 01/09/2019 07:47

I've seen shops getting the Christmas stock out already so I think people will be fine this Christmas. It's the Christmas after that might be a problem.

CloudyVanilla · 01/09/2019 07:47

I haven’t looked through the prepper threads much yet but I’m more worried about Christmas food!

I hope there is enough fresh food (isn’t there already a sprout shortage!!) and I’m worried about prices rocketing if this no deal does happen. I really hope there is a post Christmas extension to the deadline, that would be most helpful.

SnuggyBuggy · 01/09/2019 07:48

Christmas will never be cancelled in our house even if it's a twig painted green in an old tin and a Fray Bentos chicken pie 😁

I’ve nearly finished my Christmas shopping, I do it early every year so I can sit back and relax. But this year I’m extra happy to have it done. Think I will get my Christmas joint in shortly and pop in the freezer.
I still can’t believe I’m having to think this way though.

SnuggyBuggy · 01/09/2019 07:59

I like to present shop early too to be fair but I mean some things could be necessary.

DH would bloody love a sprout shortage.

I try to include roast dinners in my general prep as far as I can with gravy powder, stuffing mix and tinned potatoes but obviously it's not the same.

Good idea Snuggy, might get an emergency fancy chicken for the freezer now!

SnuggyBuggy · 01/09/2019 08:49

My DM told me about chicken in a can. I think they would sometimes have it on caravan holidays in the 60s. She didn't remember it fondly but it could be a good last resort Grin

As for me, in a month (maybe less), I will be thinking about getting appropriately sized turkey pieces in the freezer . We use a lot of turkey anyway so we would probably just roast up what we have. We already have a lot of presents bought, particularly for dd. Veg and stuff for Christmas dinner we have either homegrown, in freezer or dehydrated.
We have used a fake tree for years so that's no problem.
I don't see Christmas post Brexit as much of a problem but that's because we have included it in our preps.

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 14:26

FWIW, I think sprouts taste better with bacon and I have been doing my mum's old trick of pouring any bacon fat into a jar so any greens can be fried up in it as a substitute for bacon. I actually grew my own sprouts last year but had a rubbish veg gardening year this year so I will keep an eye out in the shops, blanch and freeze.

SnuggyBuggy · 01/09/2019 14:27

The main thing with presents is I quite like to get some things from Etsy and some come from different European counties. I'm guessing this will be more complicated and expensive.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 15:09

@SnuggyBuggy , that's why I have been getting stuff now. Customs tariffs for stuff from the US are huge. If it is even half as bad from
EU (not going to sort out tariffs by Christmas if we No Deal), that would add more costs.

SnuggyBuggy · 01/09/2019 15:10

And even the local crafty places must source a lot of their materials abroad. Its not going to be easy for them either.

My Christmas stuff is long done.
Some years I've made a Christmas cake, mincemeat or pudding, but often I find I can get really good stuff on clearance after Christmas with a date past the following Christmas so I do that.
Same with things like Goose fat - very long shelf life, very cheap in January.
Also get wrapping paper etc... then as it's sometimes only 10% of the price it is in December.
Presents all wrapped (apart from one I'm waiting for), I use the same decorations year after year on a fake tree so those are all in the cupboard, dinner is either hanging up to cure, on a shelf maturing (cheese) in storage along with sweets & treats (mix of frozen, dehydrated, pantry items etc..) or growing.

I'm lucky though as I have a child who doesn't really want anything except books & Lego so I can buy in advance when stuffs on sale.
We don't do a big spend Christmas here & we have a reusable Advent calendar.
Only thing that hasn't arrived yet is the newest Welcome to the Museum book because it won't be released for another couple of weeks.

I also picked up a NOW TV voucher - 2 months of Movies for £15 so we can watch all the films at Christmas already paid for.

I always do this though, it's not just for Brexit for me.

WaggingKnife · 04/09/2019 18:42

I’ve bought a few things:

Food:
Chocolate oranges
Advent calendars
After Eights
Tin of Roses
Truckles of cheese (dated 03/20)
Mincemeat
Smoked salmon in the freezer
Streaky bacon also in the freezer
Snacks like crisps, mixed nuts, walnuts, peanuts.
Dried fruit

Other
Crackers
Batteries
Aftershave for DH
Small gifts for kids - water bottles, hair bands, toiletries, bike lights, phone chargers, craft items, packs of cards, board games, torches.

I’ve made started making blackberry vodka for adult family members.

Bluebell9 · 04/09/2019 18:56

The supermarkets are starting to get Christmas stuff in. Tesco had matchmakers for 75p today.
I've got some M&S frozen croissants and bacon in the freezer for Christmas breakfast.
I've started present shopping and plan to have most of this done soon as I'm pregnant an due on 27th Oct.

bellinisurge · 04/09/2019 19:52

Best wishes @Bluebell9. Smile

Bluebell9 · 05/09/2019 11:23

Thank you @bellinisurge

Its a great excuse to prep without letting people know I have a stash!

torthecatlady · 07/09/2019 22:37

I normally try and do my gift shopping and dry cupboard foods done in advance to spread the cost, so no difference there.
Although, I did see something about a possible sprout shortage so I've bought some frozen sprouts for "emergencies"... although I may end up eating them before Christmas!

Biancadelrioisback · 09/09/2019 08:14

I've finished my birthday and Christmas shopping for DS. His birthday is a few days before Xmas, DHs birthday is in November and our wedding anniversary in October so I have to be prepared or i couldn't afford it all.
Food wise, im not too fussed! We always have stuff to make Yorkshire puds, grow our own potatoes and carrots, would be sad if we didn't have any meat but we have some frozen fish and chicken breasts so would make do!
I don't have any chocolates or crisps yet. I can't keep them in the house as DH will eat them all. I'll probably buy cheese next month and a party pack from iceland for the freezer but we'll cope with what's in the house.
I agree with PP though, I don't think this Christmas will be too impacted, but next year will be difficult.

BlackeyedGruesome · 10/09/2019 00:06

and there is not so much you can prepare for the following year. maybe christmas puddings
