Formula - how much would you stockpile?

Having only fairly recently realised that the formula we use (HiPP Organic) isn't made in the UK - and that apparently none of them are - has shaken me out of my 'I don't want to be one of those hysterical people' complacency - I feel like I risk DH and I going hungry, but not DS! I was just wondering if people had any guide as to how much formula to stockpile? He's 7 months and gets two breastfeeds a day and then around four bottles - I guess if we ran out of formula my supply would probably pick up but I don't want to rely on that! What I am trying to cover here? A week, two, a month? Thanks!

I'm confused - maybe I need more sleep!

Are you worried that HiPP, or any formula, will no longer be sold in the UK because of Brexit? Sorry I honestly don't understand your post!

Seriously I wouldn't worry about it.

I'd go with a month's worth. I figure supply won't stop, it would just slow down, so use the additional tip bridge the gap. Plus, he'll be 8 months by Brexit, he'll be eating more and more solids with every month, and you can increase the breast feeding in a proper emergency scenario.

I'm worried about the possibility of a temporary shortage - not that it'll stop being sold altogether but that there will be temporary supply problems in the event of a no-deal brexit. I think this is quite an unlikely thing to happen but given that a) formula has a fairly long expiry date, so it's not like it'll be wasted money anyway and b) it would be really awful if we did get to the shops and the shelves were empty it seems sensible to have a plan B, even if it's for a remote possibility

4 boxes would easily be a months supply at 8 months old. Plus more solids and cow's milk would be okay if really pushed.

When mine were little I always kept a stock of a few weeks worth of formula anyway, even when there wasn't any danger or supply issues.

We’ll be building up a months supply of formula just in case. I remember there was previously shortage and like you want to be prepared.
If there’s no issue I just won’t buy any for a month - no harm.
We’re doing it with a few other things as well. But nothing perishable so it won’t go to waste

As you can give cow's milk as a drink from 12 months, then if you can afford to I'd just buy enough to last you that long. Not because I think you need to, but because then you don't need to worry about it at all and it won't go to waste either.

Ah, this is a good idea - but any suggestions from the more experienced about how much that's likely to be? He refuses to be fed so only eats finger foods (well, that and wipes spoons of yoghurts across his own face) and so is having a somewhat slow start on solids - his nappies reveal that he is definitely genuinely eating, but he hasn't yet dropped any milk at all (including the night feed, alas). At the moment it feels like we're getting through tonnes of the stuff, but I guess that'll change in the next couple of months?

Honestly, I'd just assume that he'll continue drinking the same amount right up to 12 months. If he doesn't then you can still use it up as you gradually switch to cow's milk.

Huggybear16 · 09/02/2019 19:09

So you'll need enough to last 4 months? One tin a week would be 16 tins.

It's not like it's going to go to waste, is it? You're going to use it whether there are supply issues or not. If you have the money and the storage space then get 16 - just check the expiry dates will see you through.
