Okay so I'm very new to this. Initially I wanted to start a brexit cupboard after reading a few threads on here. Then I thought there's no harm in having some supplies should anything happen really. Totally clueless though. I'm going to say what I have and then if you guys could critique it that would be good.

7kg pasta
4 kg rice
12 tins various soup
8 tins of various fruit
2 tins potatoes
6 tins carrots and peas
4 jars curry sauce
6 jars pasta sauce
2 tins lentils
4 tins tomatoes
2 tomato purée
6 sponge puddings
2 litres long life milk

1 x calpol
2 x Milton fluid

What do I need more of? How long is the above likely to last? (family of three)

Am I missing something important?

ok for a start there's no protein

you have 7kg of pasta which is about 28 family sized pasta bakes but only 6 jars of pasta sauce.

meat
cheese
butter
oil

Get those sorted as a starting point.

I'd want to see dried pulses, beans and nuts too - reasonable source of protein to replace/supplement meat if shortage.

Batteries!

Don't just think about dinners.
tea
coffee
sugar
breakfast cereal
porridge
crackers/bread substitutes
baking ingredients - flour etc
powdered milk can be used to make pancakes, sauces etc
pickles
jams
honey
peanut butter
nuts
dried fruit
dried lentils too - two tins is one or two meals, five kilos is probably a good thirty meals

toilet rolls
toiletries; I've got shower gel for about two years - it's easy, doesn't go off, don't have to think about it now it's there.
shampoo
toothpaste
toothbrushes
etc
medicines - paracetamol, ibuprofen etc

cleaning materials
I'll stop there for now! Grin

Amazing advice! Thanks everyone!

I have about four tins of tuna and about 6 assorted meats! Forgot to add them in!

Can you freeze butter?

yes you can, and spreads like bertolli which my mum freezes.

apparently you can freeze eggs, there are several posts on here about it.

These kinds of threads are like a "how long is a piece of string?" question. It's best to think of it from your personal context. It's going to be contingent on all sorts of things like budget, space, dietary requirements, taste preferences, family number, garden space, personal self control levels (not to raid the chocolate stash Grin )

Imagine you are housebound for a few days (family member has infection and you all need to stay in). What food would you ensure you have in?

Also imagine you are going camping for a few days (with no cool box facility) and only a small camping stove. What shelf stable/long life food do you take with you?

Combine these two lists and you'll cover two main bases that are likely to be affected. Shortage of supply in the supermarkets and hairy situations there as people have fisticuffs over the last pitta breads and celery sticks on the shelves. In case of energy shortages, you also have long life and easy to heat up food.

Have a look through your current stocks, previous till receipts, meal plans, shopping lists etc to help build a masterlist of things to prep.

I would say, as a first layer of prepping go for nutrient density. Meat, fish, vegetables, eggs, dairy etc. You deffo need to put more protein on your list. Cover fresh, frozen, tinned, jars and shelf stable sachets.

Secondarily, stock up on caloric density as a fall back. Flour, sugar, vegetable oil etc. Less than ideal, but will see you through.

Don't forget household cleaning/supplies... washing up liquid, laundry powder, kitchen cleaner, bleach, bin bags, cleaning cloths etc. Soap/detergent is always scarce and in demand in a crisis. Also personal hygiene... soap, shampoo, sanpro, deodorant, toothpaste etc.

Pet stuff... food, flea treatment, poo bags, cat litter etc.

General useful prepper stuff... hand cranked radio, batteries, torches, USB lights, portable fold out solar panel, USB battery pack to charge phone, tea lights, matches, water purification tablets etc.

Don't forget first aid and medical stuff... a good first aid kit and basic OTC meds like ibuprofen, imodium, insect cream, savlon etc.

Is that 2 adults & a baby? 1 adult, 1 kid & 1 baby?
I'm asking based on you having 2 bottles of Miltons Fluid.
(although to be fair, no baby in my house & I have Miltons Fluid)

If you have it for a baby, don't forget powdered milk if used, nappies etc...

Who you are stocking up for changes completely what you stock, how long it will last etc...

Babies & very young children have very different needs from an adult man for instance.

A baby and a child. I've thought about the baby seperaly. This list is for the other three!

Great suggestions and ideas

Don't forget tinned meats such as corned beef, it's protein rich etc. and has a long shelf life and can be used for sandwiches etc.

onalongsabbatical · 03/02/2019 17:59

A tip on corned beef. There's a reduced salt kind. Much nicer. Normal kind is very salty.

I forgot chocolate on my long list above! Duh!
