Freezer stocking

What items do people think are the most useful of limited freezer space?
I'm guessing any Brexit food supply issues will be for fresh fruit and veg? We wouldn't normally do frozen veg apart from peas but obviously if that's all there is..
Are things like frozen fish a waste of space as even if there are delays at port they'll be travelling in a frozen storage container?
Perhaps protein- already have tinned veggie sources but do people think meat would be scarce?

I think meat will be more expensive and there may be patchy supply for a while.
I think looking at bulking meat dishes up with say cannellini beans or whatever the preference is. My dd unexpectedly likes black eyed beans in a turkey mince chilli.
So if your lot really like meat, you could freeze some but also have ideas for padding it out.

I've been using my freezer for those things that are unavailable, different or just not nice in a tinned or jarred format.

For me, so far, that means frozen veg and hard cheese, but if I ate it I'd be putting in fish and meat too.

It's impossible to work out what might be scarce - even those items produced in the UK often rely on imported ingredients, packaging or component parts.

Following as have new freezer to fill!

Notstrongandstable · 01/02/2019 18:18

Thanks for your replies.

I think for us a couple of meat and fish options and some frozen veg.

Butter too, it's already gone stupidly expensive.

I thought cheese didn't freeze that well? Would be handy if it did because dairy is what I'm concerned about most really!

Amazing 3 for £10 meat deals in Asda at the moment.
I've read on other threads here that hard cheese freezes ok but defrosts crumbly so ok for cooking but maybe not great to eat in slices. I've put two slabs of cheddar in freezer today.

DoodleLab · 01/02/2019 20:24

I'm concentrating on meat and fish, especially organ meats, as that is where the nutrient density is. For me, there's no point wasting freezer space with empty calories like frozen mashed potatoes. Also putting away a few packs of butter/cheese in there. I'm low carb though, so trying to replicate that in a preparedness context.

Vegetables I will get in the form of tinned veg, plus I'm planning to make a ton of ferments before March and getting the garden sorted... hopefully we'll have stuff like tomatoes and courgettes from gro-bags at least.

Meat and veggies in my freezer, don't like tin varieties, have bought sandwich bags to reduce space in freezer.
Don't forget to defrost freezer for extra space.
We are finishing up the ice cream currently in freezer and I've bought custard to freeze into ice cream as veggies and meat gets eaten.
Btw don't freezer trucks run of the engine, they won't be running them of stuck in queues for days regarding frozen fish.

Cheese, butter, meat, cooked meals that have been prepared now whilst all ingredients are still available, vegetables and a bit of fruit (mainly rhubarb and berries). Other freezer is still full of random stuff which we’re eating our way through to make space for more meat and more cheese.

Getting up early tomorrow to make five lasagnes for the freezer.

NurseryFightClub · 03/02/2019 09:26

DH has just agreed we should purchase a chest freezer, I did suggest a goat and pigs, so a new freezer seemed reasonable after that. Does any one have suggestions for size and make it will be in the garage.

bellinisurge · 03/02/2019 09:39

For the reasons exemplified by the op's experience (and my own when I lovingly batch cooked and froze stuff before my dd was born Sad), I advise not putting all your eggs in one basket.

DoodleLab · 03/02/2019 12:33

I got a Miele under counter freezer last year and I really recommend it. They're built to last 20 years, so even though it was more pricy (£400 ish) than the usual makes, I felt it would be better value in the long run.

If it's in the garage though, do check what the temperature range is in there... many freezers these days can't operate below a certain temperature (14°C?), so check the specs that the location is suitable).

I finished stocking my freezer this morning. Remaining space now filled with reduced meat.

BlackeyedGruesome · 03/02/2019 16:21

well done cloud, I still need to sort mine out. I will be filling with as many frozen veggies as I can. we are not great meat eaters so no problem there.

I am stocking up on tinned veg as well just in case.

it can be used as food bank donations if necessary.
