Preppers

Tins/packets in the bin/recycling showing people that you have food

I know this is rediculous, but whilst planning our cupboard DH and I have been wondering whether anyone is worried that (in worst case scenario obviously) the packaging from the food we have stored will show that we have stored, if you know what I mean?
We are a family of 6, so the tins would soon add up in the recycling.
I may have been watching too many of the paranoid type prepper vids
(not brexit related, I've always been interested in prepping)

I would be gutted if the preppers threads disappeared into a quiet corner of Mumsnet. I find them fascinating.

Feel free to add it to your favourites @BaronessBomburst . I have all sorts on mine out of curiosity too.

ShatnersBassoon · 30/01/2019 13:01

@Bellinisurge - I've just looked at your AMA, and it seems like you (all preppers?) are preparing for any kind of problem, from the smallest like powercuts right through to nuclear attack.

You're right, I have nothing useful to offer the op. It's the first prepper thread I've come across, so it completely confused me. I thought it was a 'zombie apocalypse right now!' panic.

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 13:06

Glad you have looked at it more closely.

I think you're being over-sensitive bellini. There's nothing wrong with preparedness - but you must see that expecting your recycling to be collected in the event of mass shortages, looting and rioting is a little bit amusing. It was perhaps the phrasing more than the underlying issue (rubbish disposal in emergency situations).

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 13:54

@KatherinaMinola , I don't expect my rubbish to be collected in a time of crisis. Not sure why thinking about alternatives makes me or anyone else sensitive.
The op is asking a question about disposing of rubbish to other general Preppers. What with this being the Preppers topic. Nobody is an immediate expert in prepping and thinking about the possible difficulties in the norms of daily life is what we do as well as considering solutions to those difficulties.
I hope you don't have home or car insurance because that would be crazy thinking Grin

So, we've established it's best not to put one's waste in your outside bins during times of chaotic shortages, as (a) it ain't going to get collected, (b) people will clock you having a stash.

I'm going to hammer mine flat and store it under the floor boards, in a kind of Tolkien furnace. Hopefully next to the dessicated body of JRMogg.

Huggybear16 · 30/01/2019 20:35

It's in active topicsbellini. And tbf, it was a very silly question

Not as silly as your reply. You must lead a pretty boring life if that gave you the biggest laugh you've had in a while.

BlackeyedGruesome · 30/01/2019 22:44

I know where my neighbours will dispose of their rubbish.. in my feckingbin. They are disgusting in their rubbish habits, general waste in recyling bags leaking rubbish sacks, stuffing bags behind other peoples bins, when they need the space for themselves...

previous residents of that flat used to throw their tea bags into the loft. Confused

I am confused. if you have stored a massive load of food in tins and packets, this takes up space. surely there will be more space than the volume of the empty packets? cardboard, washed out plastic?

nappies would be a problem,
