Keeping warm?

Any ideas on keeping warm in the event of power cuts?

My flat is very old and cold anyway even with heating on! Usually I have a small electric fire going.

I have a real fireplace but have never used it and don't feel brave enough to try. Is there anything I can do with candles to increase heat? I bought a merino top recently and it's quite cosy but looking for other options. Thanks.

Ha ha, did you stumble into a flaming flowerpot at the same time? I can picture the scene!

Thanks everyone for the responses! Really helpful. I'll look into the flower pot heaters! :)

I have had my curtains closed for three days in the living room as it has been really cold. It has made a big difference to the temperature in the living room. Not a great solution but ok in the coldest weather.

We have not had heating on downstairs either, upstairs for the children.

whymewhyme I'm not sure what your question is. But a power cut is when the electricity goes off for a while. I'm not sure if the same thing happens with gas.

It happens. We had no power over new year. You can see current power cuts on this website - www.ssen.co.uk/Powertrack/ - the one near Reading has been off since last night, so finding out how to keep warm in a power cut is very sensible.
