If the electricity supply is affected...

What's the best option for cooking?

Will gas be affected? I have a gas hob (and central heating) but electric oven.

I'm trying to imagine a scenario with no gas or electricity and drawing a blank on how to feed my family.

Do you have a garden?

Gas barbeque (or charcoal)
Kelly kettle with cook set
Solar oven
Camping stove... from the single one ring ones that take an aerosol can of camping gas to the larger ones that hook up to a gas bottle. Don't use inside, not even besides the back door or open window... the carbon monoxide can still build up around the ceiling.
Rocket stove... just uses twigs and small branches.

PerverseConverse · 26/01/2019 16:22

Damn it, I sold my camping stove last summer 😩

Your gas stove should still work but you’ll have to manually ignite it- rather than using the ingnition button. A cooker lighter will work or cooking matches.

AppleBlossomArseCheeks · 26/01/2019 16:48

Are we to lose gas?

PotteringAlong · 26/01/2019 16:49

We’re not going to have no gas and electricity...

Lwmommy · 26/01/2019 16:53

Brexit it unlikely to affect gas/electricity but if you have an electricit outage due to weather or grid outage and you have a gas oven you can still use that by ligting the hob with a match. Our gas oven has a grill section which is also an oven which can be manually lit too. The main big oven can't be manually lit.

BiscuitDrama · 26/01/2019 16:54

Eat tinned beans/fish and fruit?

bellinisurge · 26/01/2019 17:03

Not likely with Brexit but I have a number of options if mains gas and electric go out.
Multifuel stove; camping stove; ability to build a rocket stove (spare bricks to do it); Dutch oven; ability to build small fire pit (and spare bricks); cheapo sun oven which I used in the summer; hot water bottles aplenty; wool blankets aplenty; hurricane lamps and fuel for them.

Racecardriver · 26/01/2019 17:05

You should get one of those fondue bowls that goes over a tealigjt candle.

bellinisurge · 26/01/2019 17:06

Also have a fondue bowl I got cheap in a charity shop Grin. And candles. And solar powered torch. And wind up ones.

PootlesBobbleHat · 26/01/2019 17:08

We could use our caravan which has a working kitchen and gas bottles, as well as water pumps etc. Although some bits will need hand operating without a charged battery (a battery lasts a couple of weeks though).

If the Beast from the East knocks out power supply I might do some rather chilly cooking for a while but we'd be fully functioning.

PootlesBobbleHat · 26/01/2019 17:10

Again, my DH thinks I'm weird even thinking about it...

And maybe I am. But I can live with that Grin

ElyElyOy · 26/01/2019 18:02

Gas central heating needs electricity, but most traditional l gas fires don’t: some newer style gas fires with electric ignition and no way to manually light them wouldn’t work in a power cut though.

Power cuts can happen because of major building works or weather. Our office was once without power for a week because the waterboard accidentally cut the mains electric and it took them ages to find the fault and repair it.

BiscuitDrama · 26/01/2019 18:26

Don’t fondue bowls need warming up first, using power? What sort of fondue are you thinking - cheese or chocolate or meat?

bellinisurge · 26/01/2019 18:50

My fondue thing is warmed up solely by tea lights. Seventies vibe is optional Grin

JurassicGirl · 26/01/2019 21:51

We have a single ring gas camping cooker (that we would use outside).

Our house is all electric so it would be chilly if we had no power but at least we could boil water for hot water bottles.

We've also got a few disposable bbqs that we could use at a push!

Huggybear16 · 27/01/2019 14:16

We’re not going to have no gas and electricity...

We will never be without gas or electricity? Never ever?

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 14:21

I've had no gas and no electricity in my northern suburb in the past 5 years @PotteringAlong . When stuff broke down or lines got cut during road works.

Yrep · 27/01/2019 14:41

Ive got Kelly Kettle + cookset, Cobb + a load of charcoal, homemade woodgas stove, camping suitcase stove, micro backpacking stove. I use all of them regularly. I'm planning to get a thermal cooker.

I also have a cast iron fondue set and meths. I do actually make fondue! The flame can be quite fierce and it could be used to heat most things up.

I have a gas barbecue but haven't been able to find anywhere locally that sells the gas! Before I moved here I would barbecue very regularly all year round but that can't be good for you and I don't have food stored thst could be barbecued.

I would like to get a camping pressure cooker next.

I have no heating so the means to boil water for HWB is vital for me.

A bloke round the corner has built a wood fired pizza oven in his garden and uses it for everything.

We get powercuts a lot. People were taking pans of food to one house that has a woodburning stove to get stuff heated up.

TheElementsSong · 27/01/2019 15:16

Even in big cities there can be powercuts, just for random reasons (not Brexit-related) and it's probably worth at least thinking about how you would manage.

(Not so man years ago, when I lived & worked in a London suburb, one morning a squirrel got into the local substation and [well, I don't know exactly but I imagine brûléed squirrel was involved]. The damage was so bad that there was no power to the entire area for almost the whole day. We all got sent home from work, which wasn't as fun as it sounds because I also lived nearby so I couldn't just lounge around at home dicking about on the Internet.)

Anyway, the point is, disruptions can happen. It's worth putting a bit of thought into it. Matches, candles, food that doesn't need cooking, a way of keeping warm, etc.

BadlyAgedMemes · 27/01/2019 17:49

It'll just be our £10 gas camping stove out in the garden for us. Sad It's a bit pathetic, but since we don't really do BBQs or lots of camping, I don't feel justified in investing into anything bigger/better. We have a four-pack of gas canisters in storage, and some food in store that wouldn't require an awful lot of cooking. It'll be the lack of a kettle that I'll miss!

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 18:26

@BadlyAgedMemes , I don't think it will be necessary for Brexit but you could google Rocket Stove to make a diy barbecue to cook on if it's a general "interest" to you. Or just buy a cheapo barbecue and have check to see if it'll take a whistling kettle. Which are both not too pricey in themselves and very pleasing on a hob (sound of my childhood).
For lights, a head torch attached to an old four pint plastic milk bottle makes a good lantern. Fill the plastic milk bottle with water and point the headtorch inwards to create a more chilled out ambient light. More relaxing than just torches.
Again, unless you are in NI , I do not anticipate power problems with Brexit.

TooTrueToBeGood · 27/01/2019 19:02

I would imagine that would give one a very sore neck.

BadlyAgedMemes · 27/01/2019 19:46

@TooTrueToBeGood hah! Grin

We're set on tea lights and candles, which are great for stationary light, and have headlamps and torches for moving around (because my darling DM was adamant that we need some, which I'm now thankful for). Also one solar powered lamp, but it doesn't give very much light. Still better than nothing.

I've had a good google on Rocket Stoves, thanks @bellinisurge . Something like that would be great. I love the idea of a simple, whistling kettle, too. We never had electric kettles when I was little, either, but I've definitely come to rely on them these days...

bengalcat · 27/01/2019 19:49

Have a gas stove , barbie in the garden and candles - not expecting to need them but just a relic of growing up with power strikes in the 70’s
