What are you stocking up on?

For the freezer - Quorn, Linda McCartney stuff, tesco sausage rolls! Green beans, brocolli, cauliflower, peas, sweetcorn, chips, roast potatoes, waffles.

Cupboard - chickpeas, refried beans, butter beans, kidney beans, baked beans, spaghetti hoops, curry powder, stock cubes, gravy powder, timned peas, carrots, sweetcorn.

Lots of other things that everyone else is probably stocking up on like tinned fruit, custard powder, soup & household stuff like toothpaste, loo roll etc.

Absolutely fab ideas here for non-Vegans. I think vegan foods are a really untapped resource for Preppers like me.

TabithaBraithwaite · 18/01/2019 21:47

Great suggestions & ideas thank you 🙏🏻

One good thing is lots of the vegan “cheese” has amazing dates (as does yummy stuff like Sweet Freedom and Heavenly whipped cream Wink).

As above really, other than basic Pizza and cake packs/ingredients. And lots of cereal, sweets, biscuits and chocolate: partly because it’s often harder to pick up vegan options to when I see them I stock up (maybe a little excessively!). I also LOVE roasted almond milk at the moment.

I haven’t tried freezing Pure margarine yet though, I think I’m scared Confused

I also have a decent supply of Astonish cleaning products (Vegan labelled) from Home Bargains.

Lentils - big packs of dry ones plus packs of ready to eat ones in case there is no power.

Similarly with beans a mix of dried and tinned.

Jackfruit for making pulled "pork".

Tinned sweetcorn, peas etc.

Jars of roasted red peppers.

Pasta, rice and quinoa.

Huge quantities of oats (for porridge and making overnight oats in various forms using lots of the other ingredients)

Tinned tomatoes, jars of passata and tomato puree to allow for lots of different sauces to be made.

Lots of olives, capers and porcini mushrooms for adding flavour and interest to dishes.

Falafel mix (just add water, dollop on tray and bake).

Herbs and spices, liquid smoke, Tabasco sauce, soy sauce, miso paste - all to add flavour to make the staples more exciting.

Bread flour, yeast, sugar, part baked baguettes and wraps with a long shelf life.

Lots of nutritional yeast, bottled lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and cashews so that I can carry on making my own sour cream and vegan parmesan provided there is power.

Lots of chickpeas and olive oil for hummus.

Cocoa, tea and coffee.

Nakd bars for sweet treats.

A variety of nuts and seeds including chia, flax, pumpkin and sunflower.

Long life nut milk.

Lots of tinned and dried fruit including medjool dates for a sweet treat.

Honey, maple syrup and jam.

A freezer full of spinach, chilli, garlic, bagels and a lot of batch cooked meals.

Usual cleaning products, paracetamol and plasters.

I was eating 5 month old sweet potatoes the other day that I found in the back of the cupboard: they were absolutely fine :)

BlackeyedGruesome · 23/01/2019 17:44

Asda have violife cheese on offer, dated December 2019

ElyElyOy · 23/01/2019 18:11

Alpro yogurts are 2 for £2 in Tesco: apparently people do freeze it as ice-lollies, but the consistency isn’t the same. I don’t know wether to try some (with the vanilla version - yummy!) and see how it is: it does form a massive part of our diets so it’s worth a go I suppose :)

Snugglepumpkin · 23/01/2019 20:16

@Royalton where did you get a mushroom growing kit for a fiver?
Enquiring minds want to know :-)

squee123 · 23/01/2019 20:33

Tesco has Meridian nut butters for half price at £1.25 at the moment. They tend to have long dates, mine are October 2021

@roaylaton
Thanks.
I have grown mushrooms in the past they are easy, but my kit was a fair bit more than a fiver.

TabithaBraithwaite · 23/01/2019 21:19

Loving the ideas, thanks all.
I’m adding popcorn kernels and dried fruit to my list too. My Kids love homemade popcorn.
And lots of oats & alpro milk.

bellinisurge · 23/01/2019 21:28

Ooo popcorn. That's a great one. Thanks.Smile

falcon5 · 23/01/2019 21:34

Ginger root... I normally have it on the counter and use it. If I want to get and store.... in a dark cupboard? Pickle it? Ideas? Please.

ElyElyOy · 23/01/2019 21:48

Alpro plant milk 3 for £3 in tesco with brilliant dates on (including the children’s 1-3+ and flavoured milk!)

bellinisurge · 24/01/2019 05:38

@falcon5 I have frozen it before now My dh returned from a shopping trip with some in a jar - pickled in a paste- from "the Indian section" he said.
