If you are prepping for Brexit, did you vote to leave or remain?

I've been looking through this section and realise how many of you are stashing up supplies of food etc. I wondered whether you voted for Brexit and whether you guessed all this might happen - if so can I ask why you voted for it? If you didn't vote for it, are you worried about the future of the UK in terms of access to food etc or do you just always like to be prepared?

Voted remain, though I wasn't really aware of potential supply problems at that point.

Always thought preppers were batshit crazy so I'm shocked to find myself doing this, and look forward to going back to a more normal sized pantry when all this is over.

HollowTalk · 10/01/2019 13:55

I didn't think anyone had thought of potential supply problems, which is why I posted this. Certainly it was never mentioned by any politician. It is really worrying as there are so many people living hand-to-mouth in this country and god knows what'll happen then if there are severe shortages.

Remain but, if you don't mind me saying it, I personally prefer to keep Brexit back and forth off here.
To me, as a prepper, Brexit is just another likely hiccup like heavy snow where I live- northern suburb.
I've been trying to encourage non- Preppers to have a think about getting some resilience in their food stores in anticipation of Brexit and offering suggestions if they have particular prepping concerns .
I also think about unemployment, about ill health, about power cuts (we've had them). It's about scanning the horizon for reasonably likely problems and putting things in place to tackle them.

Voted remain. Got my Brexit prep grocery order being delivered by Asda this afternoon. Going to store it all in the summer house in case of need and donate to a food bank if not needed.

I wondered if I was being a bit mad to worry about it but DH who is usually very calm and measured about everything said it was a good idea to be prepared for shortages of fruit and veg. Got lots of tinned stuff coming and some long life milk and dried pasta. Couldn't get any tinned potatoes as Asda had none in stock!

BadlyAgedMemes · 10/01/2019 18:30

I didn't have a vote, since I'm not British. In a way it doesn't really like any of my business. I'm just quietly trying to live in this country, minding my own business...

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 10/01/2019 18:31

Your OP has notuing to do with Prepping. There is a section for Brexit. Post it there.

HollowTalk · 10/01/2019 18:35

Of course it has something to do with prepping! I asked whether people who prepped for Brexit voted to leave or not - I wondered why anyone who thought you'd have to prepare like that would vote to leave. I wanted a proper discussion and now two people have told me to get out of this section!

@HollowTalk if you want to know did I know there would be likely shortages before I voted, the answer is yes. It influenced my vote but it wasn't the only thing that did so.
It was labelled Project Fear and dismissed so it was talked about. I don't have special knowledge or insight but I know how crucial Just In Time is and how vulnerable it is. I've also lived in countries with food shortages and didn't want to take the risk for my family's sake.

HollowTalk · 10/01/2019 18:40

That's what I was wondering, bellinsurge, because I don't remember any talk about food shortages. I remember the Project Fear thing but thought it was to do with companies moving abroad etc. And yes, to JIT. When it works, it's fine, but when it doesn't, things can go wrong very quickly.

Nope @HollowTalk , Project Fear was also problems with food supply and basically anything negative.

StuntEgg · 10/01/2019 22:43

I voted Remain, and am somewhat horrified that we seem to be blithely walking into these potential problems.

No, there was no mention of food shortages apart from what was ridiculed as "Project Fear" but in retrospect, if the likes of Dominic Raab didn't realise that the port of Dover is signficant, there is little chance that anyone in the Leave campaign gave any thought to how all the essentials on this island arrive on our supermarket shelves or in our pharmacies. This is a situation borne of ignorance and now that we know how disastrous it could be they should revoke Article 50 until they come to their senses come up with a proper, feasible plan, then re-run the referendum . But they won't.

I started prepping after happening upon James Patrick on twitter. I didn't start straight away, as I hoped he was just a conspiracy theorist with a doomsday outlook, but over the last 18 months he has been proven right about so many things that I felt it prudent to start, and I'm glad I did. I do it with anger, as I find it ludicrous that any state would inflict such a pointless SIW on itself, in peacetime, but it is what it is and sadly we all have to pay the price.

Thanks to the Preppers thread and posters like bellinisurge I'm likely to be far better prepared for emergencies in the future, as this has really made me think about how I currently cope with unexpected events (badly) - the only vaguely positive outcome of Brexit for me.

ElyElyOy · 10/01/2019 22:51

I voted Remain and could foresee problems with imports: not just of food. A lot of people don’t seem to realise that even food we produce here relies on imports: machinery, parts for the machinery, chemicals, animal feed etc. A lot of which can’t be sourced from the UK at present as we don’t have the facilities.

However, I don’t prep because of Brexit, I’ve always been a low-level prepper: for financial, health and weather reasons. The only difference that this has made to my prepping has been to gently nudge love ones to get a few bits in, just in case (although I have probably increased a few items myself so I can help them out if required and have made provisions so that they can come and stay with me if necessary).

bellinisurge · 11/01/2019 06:24

Thanks @StuntEgg

Remain but food wasn’t even on the agenda then. It was freedom of movement etc reasons for me.
My parents voted leave and have a very healthy Brexit cupboard.

ArmchairTraveller · 24/02/2019 06:59

Remain, I’ve always been a prepper though.
I didn’t foresee any problems about food shortages because I thought that the politicians would be more organised and rational than they have proved to be.

ArmchairTraveller · 24/02/2019 07:04

My prepping is along the same lines as Bellini, spot possible future problems and have a back-up planned.
I’m the one with an emergency kit in the car, the first aid kit on a walk and the spare bag when you’re standing there with your hands full thinking ‘Oh fuck’ All sorts of reasons why it’s been my nature from childhood.

Cloudtree · 26/02/2019 20:31

remain
