In the event of empty shelves due to panic buying or no deal chaos how many days food are you aiming for?

Excellent @RockinHippy - I grow bay and have dehydrated a load for cooking.
How do you deploy it?

Just scatter a few leaves around in your cupboards near dry stores. I stick one in jars of pasta etc too. It doesn't take many, but is surprisingly effective, seems to keep all bugs at bay 👍🏼

Excellent.

bellinisurge · 07/01/2019 11:31

Thank you @RockinHippy

I'm aiming for a month of breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Worst (or maybe best) case scenario i'll have a very cheap month in autumn when i won't need to shop!

ivykaty44 · 08/01/2019 21:06

What are you having for lunch?

BellMcEnd · 08/01/2019 21:59

Reading all this with interests. I’ve been buying extra tinned stuff each week - especially tinned mackerel, tuna, various beans, tomatoes and sweet corn. We’re having a big garage sort out in the next couple of weeks and putting up some shelves for extra dried pasta, rice, oats, coffee etc. It’s all stuff we use so it will get eaten of there are no major issues. Definitely anxious for family members who have serious medical issues and who are dependent on medication to stay alive Sad

Side, I live on the isle of man so know what it can be like with ferries, a few years ago due bank holidays, weather and problems with the main ferry the boat hardly sailed for 10 days over xmas and new year, thankfully I always stock up at that time of the year because some of the shops were starting to get pretty empty

@Somerville
Potatoes should be stored in a cold, dark, dry place. They hold better if they are still covered in clay rather than cleaned (don’t rinse the clay down the drain when you clean them though; pour it onto plants)
Traditionally a pit would have been dug in the ground and lined with straw and covered over, to store them for the winter.

I am new to all this but have been gradually stocking up on tins in my last few deliveries. Re bread, I have several packs of tortillas in the freezer. They are vacuum packed, don't take up much room and have a long shelf life even without freezing. I am going to get a few more to store fresh with my next shop.

Also, for those buying pulses, I know I'm probably teaching grandmother to suck eggs but you can get huge 5kg sacks of rice for a fiver from Asian supermarkets and big bags of lentils and beans for a few quid. Ours even does 5kg of lentils for £8 but that's a lot of lentils!

Anyone know if the advice site has gone live? I haven't seen anything yet.

Hitting B&M later for their big tins of condensed milk, 2020 date at 79p plus some curry paste and maybe some treats. I'd planned on spending £20 today but my bloody house insurance went out so got £12 to work with.

I had a dream last night that I found tinned fruit for 5p a tin. I need better dreams.

cloudtree · 15/01/2019 08:51

Just had a lot for the advice site and can't see anything.

Suspect they're maybe waiting given the vote today.
