Chickens?

I've thought about getting some chickens for a few years now, but with Brexit I'm torn between whether this would be a good idea or not.

I'm guessing things like fresh eggs would be in short supply, so obviously having my own chickens would be great, however, if things really are that bad, what's to stop my neighbours / roaming gangs stealing (or killing!) them?

Which brings me to another point - security. If a no deal Brexit is truly as bad as feared, I think one of the main problems facing us will be civil unrest and a rise in crime. Again, I've read accounts of daily life in Argentina after the collapse and it doesn't make comforting reading. How do others plan on dealing with this? I'm not telling people in real life about my prepping plans, but I guess there will come a point where people will notice.

Chickens are hard work and a serious investment especially if you are not set up for them eg in a rural area.
Do I fear people coming after my stuff? Yes. I have some low key home defence strategies but if necessary I would leave the house. Have a couple of ideas about where we could go.
I personally don't think Brexit will get like that.

Chickens are lots of work and don’t forget you need to buy food to feed them too!

I don’t think Brexit will get this bad either. I think it’s things like French wines and foods that will be more expensive so stock up on your champagne but don’t worry about your neighbours stealing things from you x

We have chickens and they are part of my prepping plan. We have six and they lay from February through to November.

However, they are not cheap. A bag of food is about £9 and whilst we supplement this with kitchen scraps you're not supposed to. By the time you've bought food, the chickens, a coop and run, a water trough, bedding for the nesting boxes, grit, wood chip or something similar for the ground etc etc it will take many many months before you've broken even.

If you think you'll save money you are wrong (or at leats it will take you a long time) but yes in terms of a prep they are great. If we had a limited food supply we would at least have six eggs a day (most of the year). In a worst case scenario we could bring them into the garage.

I'd suggest it's more likely the local foxes will cull your chickens than your neighbours.
