BREXIT Stash - how long will your stash last?

So I started prepping lightly for Brexit, a box of medicines (calpol, piriton, paracetamol, plasters etc.) I am now investigating the other threads for what people are prepping in terms of food, but I am struggling to decide how long the food will need to last.

How long will your food stash last you? Thanks.

@AnotherShirtRuined - I am an inveterate snacker and dried fruit and veg works for me. As do crisps and Bombay Mix but even I don't think I should have an endless supply of them stacked up in my garage.

Hi there.. I've been looking for whole waxed cheese but keep only finding little dinky things does anyone have a source they can share?

bellinisurge · 06/10/2018 12:25

I would suggest mail order a specialist cheese shop. I don't know if a specific one because it's not a route I have gone down. Sounds yummy, though.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/10/2018 13:30

I would check Turkish, Polish and Romanian shops for cheese, either vacuum packed or in tins.

IFeelSorryForMillie · 06/10/2018 15:36

how about this company, expensive? I have no idea as have never looked for whole cheeses before

I would suggest you ask at the deli counter in a large supermarket. They probably arrive whole and I'm sure they could price up a whole cheese.

Personally however I'm going to wax my own. I've watched how online and it looks incredibly easy.

bellinisurge · 06/10/2018 16:54

@user187656748 - that sounds excellent!

user187656748 · 06/10/2018 17:46

I have just ordered the wax so when it arrives I'm going to have go on a standard supermarket block and try it in February just to make sure it worked. Then I will buy what I think we will need (we eat a lot of cheese...) and do a load in bulk.

Anothershirtruined I had problems attaching my spreadsheet of current shelf stable stuff so I cut and pasted the list into a PM. It's a bit random in terms of order since DS1 did the inventory!

My store is fairly jar sauce heavy since its a cheap way to get a large amount of stuff stockpiled quickly, good variety of flavours to relieve boredom and added calories...

Banamara · 06/10/2018 18:13

There is no harm stocking up on essentials just in case. If things work out and there is no supply line problem, well you will use up the stock in time anyway.

I have to say though that I am not a great prepper, but all year round I buy a little extra of this and that that can sit on the shelf or in the freezer or under the bed.

I don't worry about it but I know a little extra is always there just in case.

Saved me during the snow last Winter.

But I had wine and gin, so I didn't worry too much lol!

You're all mad

user187656748 · 06/10/2018 18:23

This is not the thread you're looking for Growing

user187656748 · 06/10/2018 18:23

move along

bellinisurge · 06/10/2018 18:33

@Growingboys - now off you go and tell people on The Litter Tray how cats are all shit.

AnotherShirtRuined · 06/10/2018 19:58

Thanks for the list user Smile It's a great stash, and I can see I have some way to go as yet Smile May I ask how you make sure you use everything before it goes off? Do you have a system whereby you rotate, note dates, or similar?

In fact I have been thinking about that a lot lately. I'm slowly building up my stash, but I need a system and I can't decide how to go about it. Any tips or tricks would be gratefully received Smile

user187656748 · 06/10/2018 20:49

I just put new stuff to the back, move older stuff to the front and every now and then have a sort out. But I readily admit that I wouldn't have any concerns about using many things past their BBE date.

I don't generally carry that much, particularly in terms of tins. I have had a stockpile since swine flu but I have ramped it up in readiness for Brexit. Before doing so I actively tried to use up lots of the older stuff I already had.

daphine2004 · 07/10/2018 15:22

@user187656748 I’d be really grateful for your list. We aren’t tinned fish fans either. Thanks.

No-one has mentioned tissues or toothbrushes (although they have mentioned toothpaste). Is anyone switching to reusable versions of anything, e.g. flannels instead of bath sponge, reusable sanpro, handkerchiefs, washable dishcloths etc. I have dreadful hayfever, & can get through a standard box of tissues in a day... I figured handkerchiefs might be a better option. Even without Brexit, I'm switching - I'm probably personally responsible for several dustbinloads of tissues over my life so far.

bellinisurge · 07/10/2018 22:05

@AwdBovril - lots of mention of toothpaste etc on other prepper threads but, you are right, not on this one.

AnotherShirtRuined · 08/10/2018 07:08

I'm seriously considering reusable sanpro, actually. Just doing some research and considering my options atm. How about birth control, though? I recently had a new coil fitted so I'm good for a few years, but maybe a few condoms wouldn't be a bad idea to have stashed away? For us at least an unplanned pregnancy would be bad on so many levels right now.

Oh and I've been crocheting dishcloths, hand towels, etc., over the past few months Grin

bellinisurge · 08/10/2018 07:23

Funny you should say that. I'm too old for sanpro but my dd is about to start.
I've been watching Bryony at Precious Stars Pads on YouTube- mainly to give me tips on talking to my dd about periods. She also has a reusable sanpro business online (pads and cups). I bought some recently for my dd. I doubt she'd thank me for even mentioning it and I intend to get her disposable sanpro to start but give options to her. Including reusable pads.
Obviously if there is a problem in the shops reusables may be the only option.
However this is "work in the background " for my dd. The decision and any choices will be hers.

user187656748 · 08/10/2018 14:00

I have other stuff stashed too but food is my immediate focus.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 08/10/2018 14:14

I have a moon cup and disposable pads in storage, for both dd and me, but only planning to use them if no other choice. I have an appointment for mirena coil insertion, family is very much complete. I hear that reduces periods too. We have bidets in the house, so toilet paper usage is reduced. I encourage both wash and wipe in this household Grin

I have toothpaste/brush heads/soap/lotions enough to fill a truck but that’s just me overbuying as usual Blush
