Chances of Russian cyberattack?

Wondering what the chances are of this - and if so, are you prepared? How?

Why would there be one? I don't quite follow.

NameChanger22 · 17/03/2018 14:35

There could be one. There are all kinds of things that could go wrong. The world isn't that stable right now.

We could stay in our house for up to a year if we needed to, we have a store of everything we need.

mixture · 17/03/2018 14:39

Right.

SideOrderofSprouts · 17/03/2018 19:25

I think you’ve read the same as me www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/03/17/britain-four-meals-away-anarchy-cyber-attack-takes-power-grid/

Grufeling · 17/03/2018 22:57

Namechanger - really? A year? That's impressive.

I was hearing something on Radio 4 the other day about the unstable situation between Russia and Britain following the recent poisoning of the former spy and whoever was being interviewed stated that a cyberattack on utilities, etc was now a greater risk

Doubt they'll bother but , yep, prepared for power out including no heat.
Hurricane lanterns, rechargeable torches. Hot water bottles. Lots of blankets etc.
Used to live in Russia- they've had their fun until next time.

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 18/03/2018 20:42

Namechanger22 - do you have a year's supply of water?

gussyfinknottle · 19/03/2018 11:46

You don't need a year's supply of water- just the knowledge on how to collect and purify it. And yes, I have a stash of bottled water in my garage.

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 19/03/2018 19:22

What food do you have to last a whole year in your house? How many are in your household?

MrsJoshDun · 19/03/2018 19:30

I used to work for a water company and I tell you if someone hacked the computer systems and stopped all the water being pumped around and turned all the sewage pumping stations off it would soon be chaos.

We have a real fire and wood, ability to filter water, chickens, big veg plot.....I could do with more tinned food I guess.

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 19/03/2018 19:31

Also, would you be relying on growing food to ensure good nutrition?

gussyfinknottle · 19/03/2018 19:40

Already got a camping toilet. At first I'd use bin bags and chemicals to get my family used to the idea, but I know how to use a composting toilet so we'd switch to that.
But no, I really doubt the Russians would bother, he's won his presidential election. All the dick waving stuff (at us) will subside.

cozietoesie · 21/03/2018 19:04

Assume no power and no water/sewage facilities. There's not much else you can be ready for.

NameChanger22 · 22/03/2018 13:43

We live opposite a river and have the means to filter the water. We would wrap our indoor toilet with cling film and use our outdoor toilet. We have an indoor open fire for warmth and cooking. We have lots of camping equipment and a huge supply of gas, coal, torches, candles etc.

We have a huge store of dried beans, rice, pasta, cereals, tinned food. spices, honey, sugar, oils, coffee etc. Enough to last a year. Some foods last many years, the foods that don't last long get rotated so nothing is wasted. We also have a 10 year supply of toiletries, toilet roll and cleaning products. I calculated how much we use in a year and bought ten times that amount (before the prices went up).

We're not prepared for every eventuality, not by a long stretch, but we are a lot more prepared than most people.

Kursk · 22/03/2018 13:53

We are not on mains water or sewer. We have our own water well, and pump. We have a Generator so as long as we can get fuel (we have a stock of 80L) plus whatever is in the cars. We will be ok

Artus · 22/03/2018 13:59

namechanger Do you have the means to protect your supplies from someone desperate who wanted to take them from you?

Omgineedanamechange · 22/03/2018 14:03

Artus beat me to it. Surely having such supplies makes you a target. Or if you do have the means to protect, would you really turn away desperate people asking for help?

Kursk · 22/03/2018 14:04

Do you have the means to protect your supplies from someone desperate who wanted to take them from you?

Yes that is a key Prepper issue. You must be willing and able to protect your supplies.

Kursk · 22/03/2018 14:07

would you really turn away desperate people asking for help?

We would load up several rucksacks with spare supplies and hide them in the woods. If someone in need came we wouldn’t let them in, we would tell them we had very little, then give them the location of a hidden rucksack.

NameChanger22 · 22/03/2018 14:53

Our supplies protect us against job loss, price rises etc. Other people might not need our stuff in those particular scenarios.

I think if people don't know we have supplies then it is protected for a while. I wouldn't tell anyone in real life what we have. We don't have a gun but I would be willing to protect what we have by all means possible.

gussyfinknottle · 22/03/2018 15:02

I tell people nothing. I don't have a firearm.
My supplies are for my family. I would probably assist a useful handy neighbour. I would probably assist a senior. They have knowledge and experience even if poor health means they don't have the ability to use skills.
