Everyday recipes for tinned meat please

Please can anyone suggest ways of eating tinned meat NOT in emergency situations, so I can keep my emergency stash turning over and get a better idea of what we'll actually eat.

I've got some corned beef but don't really know what to do with it, likewise SPAM, skinny hotdogs, tinned ham.

Tinned tuna does get regularly used and replaced, and we like tins of "mackerel in spicy tomato sauce" on toast.

I'm getting a Fray Bentos pie soon to see if we like them cos I think we'd like pie, mash, peas and gravy fairly regularly.

Are any of the tinned stews, curries etc nice enough for nonemergency use? I'm not usually keen on ready made stuff but I'd love the convenience if it actually tasted OK. Does korma survive a tin OK? Any brands not too full of salt?

Can't think of much veg we'd eat day to day out of tins either, but I've got lots of tinned tomatoes and sweetcorn, and I've just discovered tinned spinach.

Cornish pasties with sweet potato, beans and corned beef sounds weird but is yummy. I used to make a batch for lunches for myself.

With hot dogs do you just take them out of whatever juice they come in and boil them? Chop them up and stir into pasta sauce?

Spam in cubes and fried up, then little potatoes and broccoli and cauliflower all smothered in cheese sauce and baked in the oven. Yum!

My nan's recipe for corned beef she called 'catalana'. It's like a cheap bolognese type sauce.

Fry an onion until soft
Add a tin of chopped tomatoes & heat through
Add a tin of corned beef, thinly sliced.

Heat until the corned beef has broken down & sprinkle in a beef oxo cube and stir well.

We have it with chips but it's fine on pasta.

Fry a chopped onion, sliced mushrooms and sliced pepper until soft. Stir in 1 tsp chilli powder and 1 tin chopped tomatoes and simmer few minutes. Cut a tin of corned beef into large chunks and stir them in gently so they heat through but don't break up too much. Serve. Great with noodles or rice. Don't think this is an authentic version of anything in the world but was 'invented' by my family years ago and has been a storecupboard staple ever since.

Out of interest, how many days/ months worth of canned meat do you stockpile? And how often do you have to rotate it?

ClaudiaWankleman It's only me and my nearly 3 year old, and I'm aiming for something like 40 cans of meat, 40 veg and 40 "other" as that's what I can easily store. Obviously none of it goes off very quickly so no real need to rotate very fast, but I've sometimes found some tins get a little rusty and I figure it's just good practice. I pretty much use the stash as overflow from the kitchen anyway, just notice that the meat doesn't get used and I don't know what to buy.

I'm going to try having soup for lunch more often with some tinned meat in it, e.g. chicken and mushroom soup with chunks of chicken roll added, French onion soup with cut up hotdogs, pea and ham soup with added tinned ham.

Figure out what works best together, then in an emergency I'd be adding pasta or similar to make a main meal.

Have you considered protein other than meat to provide a bit of variety? You can make some really nice chickpea curries for example (and they're cheap!) and tuna can always be used in tuna pasta salad or sandwiches.

Yes, I'm slowly discovering that I don't like most tinned meat, thankfully before I filled my cellar with it!

I've got a whole shelf full of various types of beans, we eat them a lot so no problem rotating those. I'd like to find some ready made tinned curries that aren't too salty.

Currently on a mission to try all the different flavours of tinned fish and stock up on the ones we like.

Corned beef hash
Corned beef and potato pie
Corned beef pasties.
Tinned ham you just use lie normal ham. Slice up for a sandwich, dice up in pasta sauce etc.
Spam fritters
Ambient stable pate / terrines / rillettes in jars are good. Lidl stock them
Also check out Lidl when they do French week. Big cans and jars of cassoulet, tagine etc are really nice.
If you go to France, or know anyone who does, the cassoulet and confit de canard / d'oie are amazing.
Canned hotdogs and burgers are horrible, no suggestions other than bin!
Tinned mushy peas are fine, if you like mushy peas.
Also canned red cabbage and sauerkraut.
Tinned garden peas and carrots are not especially nice, but I live the jars of mixed petit pois and carrots you can get. Also shredded carrots and celeriac in jars.
Roasted peppers in jars.
I don't like canned potatoes personally, but some people love them.

Oh I forgot about the retort pouches of stew, meatballs, curries etc I think the range is called "look what we found". They're pretty tasty. Have used them for camping.

With tinned ham you can make potato bake. Slice potatoes and put in rows in an oven proof dish. On top put diced onion, chopped shallots and diced tinned ham. Pour over fresh cream and a layer of grated cheese. Cover with foil and cook for 90 minutes to 2 hrs. Before finished remove foil and add more cheese. Bake till cheese is brown.

I reckon that while you're 'rotating', it's down to pasta and various sauces. ( If the balloon goes up, you'll likely eat anything.)
