What would you do if you lived in Cape Town?

As you might have read, Water supply in Cape Town is getting desperate. Here in the UK, rain isn't a problem although damaged water supply (floods etc) could be.
What would you do?
Me ? Water butt and composting toilet. As well as saving grey water for washing up etc. Grey water is Water that has already been used for washing face etc. I had to do the latter in a country I used to live in. I also have a load of 2litre bottles of cheap supermarket bought water in the garage . But that would only go so far. I know to boil any water I'm not sure of before drinking- we have a stream nearby.
Any other ideas?

I didn't know. Thanks for the alert.

When I've traveled in Africa under water restrictions we used to do things like take clothes into the shower and walk on them while showering. Quick rinse, all done. And I just didn't wash my hair for weeks. Gross but saves water.

If you had a stream nearby you could stick the water on the corrugated roof and the UV would 'clean' it.

gussyfinknottle · 30/01/2018 05:40

I know it is a process but I am always sceptical about how UV can properly sterilise Water. I'd be filtering it through fabric and then boiling and cooling it.

gussyfinknottle · 30/01/2018 06:58

Cheers- I have a steriliser stick. It's a great idea for traveling. I don't have replacement filters - too expensive just now.

Helllllooooooo · 30/01/2018 11:01

How does the uv light work? Batteries or?

gussyfinknottle · 30/01/2018 11:04

Exposure to UV from the sun is supposed to purify Water. I keep meaning to look into it but don't really know much more about it - timescale etc.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/01/2018 14:40

2-6 hours. But that's in hot sun.

gussyfinknottle · 30/01/2018 14:59

Thanks MrsTP, I guess that's way I wouldn't factor it in to my water purification plans - it ain't sunny enough in the UK.

cozietoesie · 30/01/2018 15:04

Even in the UK, UV can be ferociously high in some places. Better than nowt?

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/01/2018 15:11

I think in Africa they talk about the combination of heat and UV but I don't know whether it's viable without heat. It's good to know if you lack fuel for boiling water (takes a LOT of fuel).

gussyfinknottle · 30/01/2018 15:19

Here I'd go for boiling water . Or purification tablets . Or a drop of bleach (can't remember the proportions off top of my head). Or LifeStraw.
But if, like Cape Town, the water is running out I guess I'd look to trying to fashion condensation collection , reusing grey Water and rationing my own supplies.

If anyone is interested, I was there last week.
Showers are limited to 1x 90 seconds per day. 2x toilet flushes per day advised (not sure how policed!).
Blocks in cisterns to reduce flush volume.
Sign on kettle asking you to only boil 1 cup at a time, not fill up and waste.
Hotel was selling bottled water at cost, you were supposed to limit tap water use.So bottled for teeth, washing face, kettle etc.
Signs about not running tap when brushing teeth etc.
All taps in public toilets locked off, sanitiser stations set up instead.
Houses and businesses have grey water / rainwater tanks set up.
The brewery in East Somerset were giving people as much water as they wanted if they collected it, as they run off a spring ( huge aquifer under Table Mountain), they have had to engage armed security now as people were trying to break in....
Desalination plants are being built and first one due on line soon.
It rained heavily the Monday, so fingers crossed for them, the situation is fairly desperate, very close to day zero.

Thanks for the update @Weedsnseeds1
