This year we grew maize. Dried it, ground it and made johnny cakes.

Enabled by this bit of kit. Not going to manage full self sufficiency, but when the electric goes off it is good to have some manual tools.

What non-electric equipment do you have?

Sadly mine is basic at the moment dynamic torches and lanterns

cozietoesie · 28/10/2017 22:08

Ordinary tools (saws, hammers, screwdrivers etc) plus lanterns and radio.

MrsPestilence · 28/10/2017 22:14

Don't forget an ordinary drill or brace. Dowel in brace onto soft bit of wood equals fire.

Good thinking. (Although I suspect ours are gone now - along with the particular muscles needed to use them in earnest. As for many tools.)

Ooh, we have a manual wheat grinder. I'd love to get a large-ish electric one, too.

cozietoesie · 28/10/2017 22:56

Do you grow wheat? (Or know someone close who does?)

Eyebooyanbooyaboo · 28/10/2017 23:39

No, I bought them through my church years ago (wheat berries last forever, basically) but they don't do it any more. There are farmers who sell wheat in bulk orders to individuals, however.

See if you can make friends with one or check out the full range of things you might use it for. (If there is one.) Milling your own is hard going though - there’s a reason why mills made a profit. Wink

Suggest an old fashioned wind up watch that keeps pretty good time.

That looks interesting OP 👍
